    407,000,000 results....even worth trying?

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking at introducing a range of garden games to my website next year. Thing is, a Google search brings up 407,000,000 results!

Would it be worth even trying to rank for the term 'garden games' or would it be highly unlikely I'd ever get on the first page?

Even 'outdoor games' gets 86m results!

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Gary

Of course you can get on the first page. It depends on the time, energy, and effort you put into it. First of all, I get 383,000,000 for garden games without the quotes ... when I search "garden games" there are 209,000 results, which I think is a more realistic gauge of the competition for the term.

"Outdoor games" gets 1,010,000 results ... much more competition for that term when you look at it that way.

I'm not saying it will be easy to get on page 1, but someone is going to do it; why not you?

407,000,000 results is rather a lot, however 'garden games' is a very generic search term.

My advice would be to consider getting on page one for 'garden games' as a long term goal. In the mean time try to get high rankings for more specific terms such as 'outdoor chess sets', 'giant jenga', 'hopscotch tiles' or whatever the individual products you sell are.

you also have the opportunity to add some good unique content on the subject of garden games... how about a load of pages with the rules for hopscotch, hide and seek, traditional pub games such as horseshoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoes), skittles and other outdoor games from times gone by. you don't have to sell them, but creating a resource which people can use for free along side a shop where they can buy will certainly help in the long term.

There's more to a website than it's products.

You do not need to be top of anything to get sales.

I recently purchased a large plastic Chess set (sand filled) 60 cm high.) for the garden. The site I bought this from was way down in the search results. But they answered emails fastest with the best answers.

Searchers will keep on searching untill they find what they want . . The top of the serps might get more visits. . No guarantee they get most sales!

    Go for it ..

Well . . this message highlights your attitude . . Your message severly hints at a your own personal total lack of success at achieving Search engine results. Many others on WebProWorld do better. .

My recommendation is that readers of this thread heed the advise from the members that do have success. and ignore advise from ' losers' . .

It is not about the total number of results but rather the quality of the results/competition. Take a closer look at the first few pages, how strong are these sites?, how many backlinks do they have and from where?, how relevant are they? ... then make a realistic assessment of whether you are capable of matching or beating these sites.

The competition can sometimes seem overwhelming at first, but once you break it down it is usually no where near as bad as it first seems.

a lot of those 407 mill are tiotally extraneous - even a minor amount of seo would improve that - even if it s just to localize it to a geographical area.

In addition to not needing to be on page 1 in order to succeed, consider that there are probably a lot of long tail keywords to be had here, ones that may very well have little competition.

I suggest trying to narrow down that broad term, man. There's probably a specific keyword there that has a higher Global Monthly Search.
