Try using Google Adwords, Google Trends and Google Suggest (Insights) ... Thus, only cross-check to pick a keyword that has enough traffic and little competition.
One of the tools that I find helpful is Google AdWords Keywords Tool.
When using google keyword tool look for keywords with the least amount of competition but the most amount of traffic. Kind of sounds as easy as buy low sell high! But really you need to find the happy medium between traffic and competition. Generally long-tails are best to go for, 3 or more words. Usually less competition, less traffic too, but you'll have a much easier time ranking for a 3 word keyword phrase than you will a 2 or 1. Also the traffic will be more targeted. It's probably a good idea to focus on several long-tails and maybe one high competition keyword, if you feel you NEED it. That way it won't take to long before you are getting some traffic to your site!

All SEO keywords are not equally important - volume and competition matter! The most effective SEO keyword strategy is to compete vigorously for top placement for the most popular keyword suggestions returned by the Google Keyword Tool for a given root keyword phrase (Primary Keyword Phrase).
The keyword tool provided by Google is not very exactly. It offers a lot of unreal data. The best strategy is to follow your competitors keywords. Just look at their keywords and try to copy their strategy. Don't forget that long tail searches are the most effective and offer the best conversion rate.
I have personally have used market samaurai which works very well.
Market Samurai is great and also try Keyword Elite by Brad Callen. Now my advice would be to choose keywords that have at least 15,000 searches a month and have less than 50,000 competition. Yes, it's the same rule of thumb as in article marketing and since there's a little difference between the two... I recommend following it even though it's a blog post.
I've been using Google Adwords Keywords Tool tools ever since and its so much effective.
