Using Static Page for Home?

Sorry if this has already been covered...but I'm trying to integrate a more conventional website look to a blog.

Anyone using static pages for the home pages?
Pros? Cons?

Pro: Google looks for 'index.html' and if not found on the site root, will report that it is not found. So if you don't want this report in GWT, have a static page, or at least one with the name, index.html.
