You may read any number of things in many forums, but that doesn't mean they are true.

Much of what SEOs believe is based on what Matt Cutts says, and that is not reliable information. You have to take it with a grain of salt. You might have to take morestar's experiments with a grain of salt, too. You don't know what other factors may be at play.

So, you have to find out what works for you; that is, do your own "testing." Apply an idea and see if the result is what you want. Your result may not be a direct result of your test, though it may seem that way.

No more accurate than guessing? Perhaps. But more accurate than without testing. And more accurate than listening to what you hear in forums.

I myself, get confused by the terms sometimes. I've never really worried about PageRank, nofollowing and so forth but am looking deeper into such things seriously just because.
