    Are Link Directories Any Good?

Can someone tell me if link directories are any good, I started www.urlhammer.com which is a free backlink maker with recips. Seems it's hard to get people to come in if they just want to get their site listed.

I moved this post from link building 101 so it could have its own space.

Personally I would love to own a directory or two. But they take a lot of promotion, just like any site. You're allowed 3 links in your signature, why not add it there?

I have a small directory, I list pages that have specific content including my own pages. It serves as an extra navigation aid and a directory for car pages with a specific topic. I like it, google likes it and those listed in it like it.

I find it to be excellent value, I think well targeted niche directories are highly sought after by many webmasters.

Good Directories are hard to find and mjtaylor is right they are hard to promote. I'm just learning this SEO stuff and some friends in Austin told me what I just told you. Just because I found you here I'm going to let them know about it and I myself will be added

I think directories are good just for new sites , other wise free directories normally have deep links. Never get benefit or traffic from them, directories like DMOZ takes several months to approve link, to me thats the last link building techniques for free time.

Why just for new sites? Every time I find a new quality directory that is relevant to a client site, I submit it.

Depends on the category. DMOZ is great if you can get listed. Submit and forget it. If it comes, it's a nice bonus, if not, don't worry; you can still rank well.

Many people actually believe getting links of directories means improving traffic. Tully speaking it'll not help instantly and just only a process of link building. It's better to get links from relevant contents. This will definitely increase traffic.

I partially agree with you Julia, I think that it's fine to have a few links coming from directories, because Google like directories, and I like to like Google

Its true that directories provide a great backlink from their website to your website. DMOz is free, so its well worth the effort to try and get listed

Apart from a few select directories, I don't think the search engines give too much weight to directory links. But then again it couldn't hurt either.
