Directories have a big value. Google value many directories. When internet started Tim Berners-Lee setup the vlib.org - a directory

Yes, that must be why about 90% of directories got slapped by Google a while back.

I have see the links showing up on Google & yahoo so it is noticed by the search engines - I would recommend that the links are made with keyword anchor text for the best bang for your buck...

Basically, what I feel about directories is that they help some, but are of such lower quality that it is better to invest time in other, greater value, pursuits.

    yes they are good

link directories are also good for link exchange. They are main source of traffic for websites and higher ranking in search engines.

Ummm no. Why on earth would you think a directory was good for link exchange? They are there to get one way links from.....

Directories links are not all created equal. DMOZ can be time consuming to get listed, but if you are persistent, it can be worth the effort. Many other directories still source from DMOZ, so your links will grow through replication.

Yahoo!, Best of the Web, Business.com are all pay for inclusion but must be powerful if you can afford to invest in them. I say this because I see some of the SEO/Link Building industry leaders in all of them (Bruce Clay, We Build Pages, etc.). Like any directory, not all locations within the directory are equal, so since inclusion in these starts at $299/year (with the exception of DMOZ which is time and effort until listed), you will want to make sure to request the best part of the directory, both in terms of relevancy and authority, number of links on that page, etc. Sometimes this is a mute point because only one category in the directory is directly relevant.

I think directories are a good place to start. Google's spiders look there, so you might as well, right?

well I do think that directory submissions are really helpful but don't focus your promotional strategy by just using this task. Directory submissions can give you the best support in order to generate a lot backlinks, however using it alone won't make your website rankings a success.
