I see rands writer didn't find reporter connection or profnet either.

It's great that you discussed it with someone, William, but have you got a story of how you got a link out of it?

Link Baiting may be the most powerful method in ranking a website, but it's not relevant to all websites. Newly launched websites to gain popularity they can held a contest but we cannot find many people who participate in that contest. I personally feel that link building should be given the first preference to the website.

And if your goal was targeted traffic, then your link bait failed in part. Of course, link bait is best when it drives traffic and PR, but when we speak of link bait in SEO, the PR part is equally important and the ploy may be considered successful even if the links are not driving targeted traffic as long as the site is receiving the quality, relevant links.

But best, of course, would be to have both, so if the links themselves don't attract targeted traffic, then like any marketing strategy, content (or ?) needs to be tweaked to address that.

But, it doesn't mean the concept of link bait is somehow flawed, it means the execution left something to be desired.

For social bookmarking, I love AddThis Social Bookmarking widget (talk about a successful Link Bait - AddThis.com is RP10). Easy to create a customer AddThis widget and add it to your site or blog. The most successful link bait/widget strategy online that I am aware of. Good for them.

The reason that the AddThis widget is so popular, IMO, is that they makes it really easy for the user to share the content in a way that fits with their social media behavior, on their social networks, whether that is Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Digg, etc. I really like that you can track shares and that AddThis will automatically email you the stats once a week.

The best part is that when you create content, you can watch the quality of the content user generated drive links through easy social bookmarking.
