Thread: Y'all ever hear of Matt Cutts?

Thumbs up Y'all ever hear of Matt Cutts?

I stumbled on his blog last week and discovered some very disturbing information about the head of the Google webspam team. In a video he has posted there. http://nexwebsites.com/post/Matt-Cut...at-Google.aspx
At around 14 minutes into the video, when I see him pull up that JavaScript and say ” clicking on the link brings up a script written in some PHP sort of stuff”. I'm blown away, I can not believe the head of the Google webspam team, who is giving technical advice to web masters, thinks that clicking on a link in the source will bring up the PHP source of another file and he doesn’t recognize simple JavaScript or PHP scripting, the most basic of all web scripting languages. Just the fact he would even say "some PHP sort of stuff" seems completely absurd to me. Check out the video and you tell me. It's true, huh?

Wow, in an hour long speech, he uses the wrong term once. He must not have the slightest clue about web issues.

The best way to learn anything, is to question everything.

You have a good point there. The inability to recognize simple JavaScript or PHP syntax is significant for a number of reasons, the primary being, this is the method used for delivering the payload of virtually all SEO poisoning. The exact thing the webspam team should be focusing on, as it is the most detrimental. And he certainly shouldn't be giving technical advice to webmasters. So what does that leave?

Why would a misleader be fired? Google need him to direct the community of webmasters to the spot where google secrets won't be exposed.

I was joking. Should have used an emoticon, but I don't know the right one for sarcasm.

A PHP script is plain human readable text processed by the web servers PHP pre processor and manipulated output may be shown in your browser. You can link to the (X)HT(ML) document of that output if there is one. Is that what he meant?

Is programming / web development experience needed for his job?

Even if he is named the "head of Google's spam team", a more precise term should IMO be "Head information officer of Google's spam team".

I have not watched the video so I have not voted.

You know it IS possible that Matt Cutts was joking, as he does have a jovial personality, when he said "that PHP sort of stuff". This theory is supported by the fact he has been known to joke and it is unlikely that someone in as technical a position as him would indeed not know what that was. Makes sense...
