The new world of Facebook search is upon us - at least for developers and marketers using Facebook to promote their services or products through Facebook Applications.

And here I am, just finishing up my application. I finally was able to submit the application to the Facebook Application directory because I've gained at least 10 Monthly Active Users or Total Users. That was a struggle.

Now that my application has hit the big time and is being listed in the Facebook Application directory I've decided it must be the time and there must be a way to get my application ranked - ranked number 1 for the terms I believe are mostly searched for with respect to my industry.

So I've discovered what I believe are some trends in the Facebook Application search results. At the moment I'm not too sure if one could even rank for any specific reason on the FBA results but I'm sure there's at least one ranking factor. I know it has nothing to do with the application ratings as there are applications with lower ratings ranking out the apps. with the higher ratings.

So I'm presuming it must having something to do with keywords or possibly a combination of the two?

I'm making adjustments and testing and please take note. I haven't searched the web whatsoever regarding this issue as I'd like to keep my discoveries within this thread.

I'm going to keep testing though and definitely return with some of my results...

So I searched Google for results related to "seo facebook application directory" etc. and found one forum where someone was asking the same question re: ranking in the Facebook Application directory and found this post from September 2007 regarding Facebook changing it's application directory ranking system.

Has anything changed? According to the post user engagement is the primary ranking factor. From there I was unable to find other websites indicating any changes to Facebook's ranking system or information about it in general. I did find a few SEO companies offering SEO services related to ranking in Facebook's Application directory but of course those are only services. I could be looking in all the wrong places and if I am, let me know.

If user engagement is still the primary ranking factor for Facebook applications that would mean we shouldn't and couldn't only rely on Facebook to promote our applications - by the usual means of sharing it or posting the apps'. fan page on our friend's wall. We now have to take this battle to the search engines.

Facebook application page are found in search and so it would seem that our best bet would be to apply off-page optimization for our application fan pages and more importantly related to our main keywords. In so doing, our attempt would be to ensure that not only our main websites rank in the SERPs for our keywords but so does our application.

That's the route I'm going now. As far as I believe, there's only so much you can do to promote your application within Facebook and so you must take the next part of the game outdoors.

I must add that when I say the stratagem for getting your application ranked higher in Facebook's Application directory is by getting your application fan page to rank higher in the regular search engine results is because in so doing you are furthering your chances of users actually using your application within Facebook and thus increasing the chance that your application has a high user engagement count.
