What Is A WebHook? WordPress's New Plugin

Wordpress.com recently released a new hook, line and sinker plugin called HookPress and not only I, but a few people have noted that the explanation on the WebHooks support page really isn't clear enough.

I have no idea how a wordpress blogger would benefit from HookPress other than getting a text message indicating that someone commented on a post - nor how HookPress could possibly enhance my users experience.

Is there a soul out there that's work with WebHooks in the past or even recently tried using the HookPress plugin for something other than their example of the text message notification?

It is not simply just for comments, but let's use that as an example. Many times people RT your post on their blog and it can show as a comment, would you not want to know of offshoot discussions on other blogs that emanated from your original post so you could share there as well and get more inbound links from the discussion? Just one example...

OK great, and thank you William - that sounds like some good reasons to use and activate the plugin but is there more? A little more than that per chance that an owner or user could benefit from WebHooks? Is it mainly a site owner benefit?

Think outside the box... An example: make an app that allows your users to set 'trigger word(s)'. If a post or comment is made that contains one or more triggers, it notifies the user, ie: their name, their website, their genre, whatever.... Get creative...

Could be used to flag impending tech support problems before an avalanche of traffic indicates the priority of the problem.

Might be able to allow you to provide enhanced customer service for best customers, rather than every zero dollar tire kicker making a quip.

Reverse it -- send car repair progress as it happens. Allows for customers to okay additional repairs if problems occur. Replace the waiting room/ standing in line, for restaurants, for dentists at a mall location ...you go shop and a text tells you you're up in ten minutes.

Perhaps it could flag unclosed trouble tickets after a certain period of time without resolution, putting your attention where it will pay the most dividends for a supervisor using Wordpress for plogging. (not a typo).

Nah, forget all that, just use it in the lowest common denominator fashion -- tin cans connected with electronic string. Yeah, that's the way to prove you've entered the twenty first century.
