We are trying to come up with well designed (read professionally formatted) ebooks. Usually we design them in Word and then route the doc through OpenOffice Writer to convert them to PDF format. The end result is not satisfying - the formatting is tricky to maintain. Besides this method doesn't allow us to produce in epub format. So after much head scratching and hand wringing we came up with some good possible alternatives - iBook Author and Pages both from Apple biosphere. The former is free whilst the latter costs little. From the Apple website, they look very impressive - they come loaded with professionally designed templates and allow you the option of formatting text that flows gracefully around a given image.

We are tooled mostly with Windows machines for development work and Linux servers. We have not opted for Mac till now. The recent Mountain Lion Mac OS is mighty impressive and for a developer - their repertoire of software/tools appear worthy of drooling over.

What is the general view here - about the best possible ebook editor ? Should we buy a Mac just for the iBook Author and Pages ? If anyone here is using the software mentioned above, what do you feel about their overall effectiveness ?
