I've been out of web design/dev for about five years - working as a content manager and then a marketing manager.

I started out in design and taught myself html, css, javascript and a bit of basic php.

I'm thinking of getting back into freelance web work, but am out of touch and just looking for some advice as to what would be the best direction to take in terms of new software/technology. I am definitely more comfortable with design than development, having worked on the front end mainly. I used to sub-contract to a developer for the back end and he now works mostly in wordpress and Perch.

What should I be looking at to bring me back up to date in terms of frontend, and would I be able to do more backend stuff myself these days?

Is the world of web getting simpler or more complex as we expect more from it?
