:-? Huh? Some people might query. Tumblr is a blogging platform, not social media? What is it doing in this subforum? :-?

There is a reason. Tumblr's abilities for users to link to other blogs, to follow other Tumblr blogs' posts, and to auto-post to Twitter and FaceCrook, have turned it into genuine social media. Users have flocked to Tumblr because of its ease of use, while more awkward site like Squidoo have stumbled.

Yahoo's acquisition of Tumblr was announced today.

Yahoo's motive is crystal clear. Yahoo wants to increase the ads on Tumblr blogs. Tumblr has lots of users, and Yahoo has longed wished to rival Google's AdSense. I predict that Tumblr users will soon be offered an opportunity to share revenue on Yahoo's ads inserted in their blogs.

Wordpress has happily reported that thousands of bloggers are defecting from Tumblr to Wordpress every hour. But, they would say that, wouldn't they? Where can they possibly have gotten such data anyway?

Marissa Mayer, Yahoo's CEO, has promised to “not screw up” Tumblr. I'll wait and see about that. Do Yahoo know how to "not screw up", anyway? What can be measured is that Yahoo's share price dipped 1.4% after the news was announced. Clearly, other people expect screw ups too! :)

Bloodbath at Twitter. (OK. Not real blood.)

Twitter has killed off hundreds of thousands of members in a digital bloodbath. But don't get alarmed. It was only the fake blood of fake members.

Firstly, people realised that their tweets could help their marketing. Then they realised that the more followers you had on Twitter, the greater weight that your tweets carried. Then somebody else realised that there would be a profit in selling people fake followers. So a market was born.

Didn't you just resent it when you had worked hard to accumulate 3k genuine human Twitter followers, and then somebody else, with a press of their Paypal button, suddenly had 30k+ real-looking followers? Well, I resented it anyway.

Of course, it was hardly rocket science for Twitter to buy the same packages, and to identify and erase the fake accounts.

One of our WPW MVP's (don't ask for a name, that would be unkind) has just lost 11k fake followers, and it is going down. ( What? Me laugh? I wouldn't be so cruel!)
