Hi guys, long time no visit, but when this happened today, it was the guys at web proworld I thought may have some idea about this, so here I am! I hope you are all doing well!

I received a solictors letter this morning, a website is claiming copyright infringement over a "calculator" web page on one of my websites. They are demanding £4000 compensation (£300 for each month it has been up) or they say they will start legal proceedings against my comapny.

A year ago I built a website that had this calculator on it for mixing vaping liquid recipes. I got the idea from seeing the other companies calculator on their website. Their calculator did not work in mobiles, it was all written in javascript and so I thought I could make a calculator in php that would be a bit better. So I did get the idea from them, but proceeded to write my own php script to do all the various calculations. As I say, their calculator is written in javascript, that I cant even see in the source code. It is the same idea, but I have excuted the idea my own way in php all written by me.

So the actual back end stuff is all my own work. The calculation being done is common, as there is only one way to make this stuff, so surely they cant stop me making a similar calculator if I write the code for it myself, specially in an entirely different language.

The front end does look similar, as I put it in an html table that was actually same size as the table they use to present the calculator, but wording is different, it just looks similar because there is really only one way to present the data, in an html table as a form with input fields. They say that the table size is same and cell padding is same, so are saying that it is infringement and that I have just "ported" (dont know what that mean") their source code into php.

I did not use any of their calculating code though, as I say I wrote it myself in php from scratch...maybe they think I have just put the javascript in a php file, but that is not the case.

Anyway..I am scared, they are a big company, I am a little company and until Monday I cant get any legal advice, but feel that its not fair, the table layout is similar yes, but the actual workings, the calculating being done, is all my own work, I even have the original text notes I made to work out the various formulas for calculating the recipes.

What do you think from what I have said, does it sound like i am on shaky ground? Can I be sued for using a similar table layout to present the data? It is not exactly same, but similar, table width, number of columns etc. Mine has a few extra rows for extra details, but essentially quite similar layout...as I say I did get the idea from their calculator, but though as I wrote my own code that was ok, that an idea wasnt copyright and surely a basic html table layout cant be copyrite...can it?

The most advanced century in the history of humankind, and everything we hoped would evaporate with time has only worsened. We're heading for the dark ages, I'm afraid.

Too bad it required hacking so many computers to create. Probably a lot more accurate (over the 24 hour period) than Alexa would ever be, but then that's just conjecture.

Site Reputation damaged by PissedConsumer.com

Why is that PissedConsumer is allowed to rank so highly when their business tactic is to extort businesses to manage their poor ratings. I have had three customers, when was in the startup phase, that had to deal with this site and their extortion tactics. The startup site had 3 poor reviews and it was not even selling product yet?

The extortion is real too, have a look at this page PissedConsumer points you to if you have a bad rep: pissedconsumer.com/business-solutions.html. For $250/month they'll allow you to manage that reputation. It does work though, I must admit. But oh gee, how nice of them. Why don't they just send Louie & Luther to visit you with a baseball bat.

After bumping up against them a few time I decided look more deeply and see if it was just me and my client base. So I recently did some homework to figure how they do what they do and found their process of achieving high ranking in Google is through purchasing sites and creating their own link farm complete with Google adword - how can Google turn a blind eye to this? Here's all the data: seomoz.org/ugc/pissedconsumer-link-farm-dominating-google-serps - Oh yes! I forgot that Google making money on Ad words! Ahhhh...

Think about how much money Pissed Consumer is raking in with businesses that can not afford to have a PissedConsumer report on the first page of Google.

Google, I used to put my full faith in you, but now, I'm suggesting that every business in the world block Google.com on their internal network until you solve this issue.
