Depends on what you mean by "professional". You've gotten some good advice so far, but I would add this -
If you mean professional software, then Premiere Pro (and Encore for dvd slideshows - both are in Adobe CS4 Production Premium) is a professional program that gives you plenty of power and flexibility for slide shows. Toss in After Effects (also part of CS4) and you've got enough power to match any Hollywood slideshow.

But if you want "quick and easy", yet professional-looking results, then take a look at the Nero suite. It'll toss a slideshow together in seconds and it will look great.
