I have a client who's site has ranked very well for a handful of keyword phrases for 3+ years. Starting in November, Google (only) seems to have dropped them dramatically.
It briefly returned to the old positioning in early December and since then has stayed down.
Where previously they were in the top 3-4 spots for things like "soft serve machine Chicago" they are now 20+ spaces down. Even for VERY specific phrases such as "Stoelting ice cream machine Illinois" (they are the exclusive distributor for Northern Illinois) the site doesn't rank anymore.
There doesn't seem to be any visible penalty as far as feedback from webmaster tools and I am at a loss on what to do to rectify the situation - aside from just typical good SEO practices.
1. work on developing more unique content
2. work on developing more in-bound links
However, neither of these really addresses the reasoning for why it was pounded down so I wanted to throw this out there and see if any of you guys could take a look and see something that I don't.
