Well I have already experienced that too and I can't do anything. I guess the usb is not working anymore that's why it could not be read by the port. The advice of tdave will work I think. Better try it :)

What is the operating system and what device you want to install? Its very important part of info. Was it installed before, is this a new device? You must be specific to help you.

It is also possible that your USB is 2.0 while your slot is USB 1.0

Generally, a USB 1.0 or 1.1 host controller should be forward compatible and able to communicate with a connected USB 2.0 device, although the data transmission speed may suffer. It should not cause the driver to not be recognized.

Those who try to download USB 2.0 driver, there is not necessary to download the USB 2.0 driver.if you are using xp,vista,or 7( it not gonna work).it already included in the system, usb is what we call plug and play device,we only need to install the hardware driver. For example, device like mouse ,keyboard ,there are not driver to install .It the "device driver was not installed " error show up.it could be the mainboard problem.

You may also uninstall all USB components in Device Manager and restart the computer. It will detect the hardware and automatically install the drivers. If the problem persists there is a problem with the USB device you are trying to connect to your computer.

Guess we have similar issue. Try below:
1. plug in your usb hdd to working usb port.
2. right-click your "My Computer" choose Manage.
3. click "Disk Management" you should see your usb drive here though its not showing in your "my computer"
4. right-click >> choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."
5. change letter window will open. click change.
6. change the letter to which you want. if G, H, or I is available.
Hope this helps.
