What does everyone think of Google's announcement that its working on social search?

Do you think social search will overtake what will now would call "traditional search"?
No traditional Search can't be overtaken by Social Search and both have their own advantages and disadvantages. So Google will prefer to have a hybrid of both.

But why not? Maybe that hybrid will be more social based if it becomes more useful and implemented correctly. My worry with social search is that it will be dominated by big name brands who weill get mentioned the most, for obvious reasons.
Social Search is limited to just your friends and your social network news you cannot expect the more from it and there are various queries which involves just traditional searches.

I can't agree that social search is limited to your friends and network. Facebook Pages, for example, can be found in traditional searches, so we already have an overlap.
I believe Ace is right, though, that Google and other search engines will meld the two.

I think social search might be important part of internet search but would not be the all.

I don't think so. Social search and traditional search will become more and more similar to each other. But social search can not overtake traditional search.

I agree with you that Facebook pages are appearing in searches but its nothing but overlap of social search and traditional search but traditional search cannot be replaced by the social search. All search engines would prefer a hybrid model of social search and traditional search.

Social search is just a subset of traditional search. So I don't think it will overtake traditional search.

I think traditional search is always going to be a requirement, social search is something that could get blocked from offices etc etc. there isnt a replacement for factual information searches.

I actually wrote a recent article about this:
The Social Media Shift (http://www.rewebsitemarketing.com/2009/10/the-social-media-shift/)
Social search isn't separate from traditional search. It is simply a media space that hasn't been fully integrated by the search engines into their paradigms. Bing and Google currently have social search and traditional search on separate platforms. They are trying to find a way to fit it in. Look for this to change at a very rapid rate in the near future when the two are merged completely.
