View Full Version : Host Gator FAILING ME!

Okay, so I have been with host gator for going on a year now and I have about 10 sites with them and finally I am ready to throw in the towel. Their servers keep lagging and spiking on and off, its causing checkout problems and more.
So, I am looking for a professional hosting company that can handle my requirements. I am not looking for anything cheap, just something extremely reliable. Please, let me know if you have any recommendations?
If you have an affiliate account I will let you make a free sale, as long as I verify that the company is quality enough.
Thanks

May I know what's your plan with hostgator? Because they have really a good reputation and i am also using it from last one year without any problems.

I am another happy HostGator customer. Please explain your specific requirements and the problems you had with them.

Their servers are often very slow I find. Every single time I am trying to get something important done they want to restart on me and ends up failing to save my work. They are cheaply priced, I will give you that, but no the quality that I would expect from them.
Maybe its just me? I don't know... No one else has had any problems with them thus far?

I have also been using Host Gator for about 2 months and so far so good. I have another site hosted on lunarpages.com. They are ok, but the support does not even compare with Host Gator.

I moved all my sites over to hostgator and ive had no problems at all so far.
Whitney, can I ask what your setup is, i.e. are you on windows or linux hosting and how is your site programmed? From experience Windows servers and .asp sites, or .php sites on Windows servers are unstable and can cause problems.

this might sound strange but are you with comcast? Comcast has TONS of problems with everything related to their services AND Comcast has tons of problems with their customers.
is your ISP Comcast?

I have hostgator with no problems
Sometimes a hosting provider will overflow an IP, and you need to ask them to put you on a new IP or a new server.
I have had that done with a few providers and it worked

I have used hostgator, they are alright.. but I would not use them for my personal servers.
I recommend you using eApps - Web Hosting For Demanding Customers (http://www.eapps.com) they are a very high quality hosting company geared more towards higher end sites. If you want to use a referral, mine is http://cli.gs/Ytd8d5
Feel free to view their reviews online

Another reccomendation is inmotionhosting, they are ranked VERY high in all reviews. We moved to them about 6 months ago and have been thrilled with both thier capabilities and support.

I partnered with Rackspace / Mosso long time ago and the support is 2nd to none. And they're a sponsor on our footer of our main site if you'd like to learn more.
Tried many hosting companies over the past years and you just can't go wrong with a hosting company using 1 Million sq feet of space and a 24/7 IT command center at your becking call.
Tech support is amazing and the prices are .. well, "you get what you pay for" .. yep!
As for our cPanel clients we use HostDime.com - lower prices and the service is good we just like wide open spaces and tons of bandwidth with Rackspace.. I think it's 4TB now.
Just letting some of you in on a little secret :)

Try Vodien. The main reasons why I think Vodien is a great web hosting company is their uptime, customer support, and hardware specifications. Hope that helps!

I have been useing Browser Update Page (http://www.godaddy.com) for about 4 years no problems so far apart from their traffic stats add on program, which sometimes takes two days to produce stats (can be seen realtime if reqiered) but not lost any information. program is needed unless you get raw logfile data as it is only possible to put html tracking code in html files not it hot linked jpg & wmv so things like google traffic stats will not show them.

I really recommend Dreamhost . They're not the cheapest but really
reliable clustered servers with automatic backup (that saved me when one
of my sites got hacked) they offer plenty of space, unlimited
domains & more
I can send you a promo code if u want

I use CyberLNC after them being highly recommended on the forums of my shopping cart (CS-Cart). They are a little more expensive than a budget host but still a lot cheaper than a dedicated server. They don't put hundreds of sites on one server like the budget guys do. And support has been incredible (for issues that weren't related to them directly). Been using them for about a year now and couldn't be happier.

And I noticed DreamHost was recommended. I used them and wasn't real happy with them....though I did like there comedy attitude and being able to save autoresponders in their backend panel. It just seemed like they were always having some type of issue somewhere (and I was being affected). Check out dreamhoststatus dotcom It is great to know who is having issues but why so many?

I agree with the rest that Hostgater may not be the issue.
Other choices:
I've been using NEXCESS.NET - Shared Web Hosting & Reseller Web Hosting Solutions (http://www.nexcess.net) for a Magento and Typo3 based site and it's been really peppy (for a Magento site). Their tech support has been good as well.
For a VPS environment suitable for coders I've had good luck with Slicehost - VPS Hosting (http://www.slicehost.com/)
For general shared hosting environment I've been with Web hosting provider - Bluehost.com - domain hosting - PHP Hosting - cheap web hosting - Frontpage Hosting E-Commerce Web Hosting Bluehost (http://www.bluehost.com) for years and have had no problems and great 24/7 phone tech support.
Hostgater has a good rep so it makes me think that your ongoing issues have more to with something on your end.

I've had zero issues with Comcast since I got it 2 years ago. AT&T DSL, on the other hand...

Whitney,
If you want great hosting, look no further.
We offer colocation, redundant servers that have zero downtime. Our clients are very happy, not only because of the zero downtime, but also because we offer the best customer service in the industry.
To better serve you, however, we would need to know what you are doing with these ten Web sites, e.g., E-Commerce, Informational, or a combination, as well as what apps you are using, and how your sites are coded, etc. We try to stay with Linux, although, we do have a Windows box, and we use PHP which is perfect for Linux. ASP, ASP.net, and JSP are okay apps, but they are not as robust and flexible as PHP, at least as far as we're concerned. Another thing we would need to know is how much bandwidth you require, and how much storage space. Also, if you could describe your issues more specifically, that would be helpful. Someone has already suggested that part of your problem might be connection related, and so the question of connection speed arises. What is your connection speed, and are you using DSL, Cable, or Satelite?
Please send us links to the ten Web sites you're referring to, and we will reveiw them. Are you the desinger of these sites? If so, please provide contact information and a URL for your site.
You may contact us at DesignComm, LLC at 860.974.1726, or on the Web if you are interested in further feedback, or have decided to switch providers and want more information about what we have to offer you.

I'd echo many other responses. I've got a few domains hosted at HostGator and am completely satisfied with performance, uptime and support. I've used a number of other hosing companies that don't measure up to HostGator.
Before moving I suggest:
1) Call HostGater support, describe your performance issues, and ask if any QOS (quality of service) controls are causing this issue.
2) Request that HostGator move your domain(s) to another server. If another user on your physical server is causing the performance issues then you're away from them.
3) If you can afford it, get a dedicated server from HostGater.
I hope this helps.

Here's another "me too". I'm shocked to hear that Whitney. I too have been with them for only about two months, but they have been simply amazing, and this is coming from someone that's a perfectionist! I've been through many hosts, and HG is by far the best.
Just ask to be moved to another server and see if that helps.

Out of luck because your server is overloaded ?
Having to call support to describe your problem ?
That reminds me why I swtched to the superior services of Dreamhost.com
with clustered MySql, php , storage & email and pro-active performance
monitoring, & of course the unbeatable storage size & bandwidth.

I don't have enough posts to post full website addresses just yet.
You can circumvent that problem by altering the URL so that it's not a valid one; e.g. "www DOT domain_name DOT extent."
Welcome aboard.

This is another thread where the OP seems to have vanished. Whitney did you PM Douglas? What does the "Server Status" show in cPanel, do all of the areas stay in the green? How about "CPU Usage" and "Memory Usage"?

I will actually agree to some extent with you. I have been with Hostagator for 1.5+ Years. At first, everything was great. But then for like one whole month, I saw multiple downtimes, slow server and database errors.
The problem was that some other site on the shared host/server was doing something wrong which affected all sites. This continued for 1+ month.
I contacted so many times: their support is excellent but this problem was not solved correctly.
I then had to inform "Brent: owner of Hostgator" about this problem. Then after sometime, my problem get solved and Brent added 3 or so months of free hosting in my account too :)
Other than this bad experience, Hostgator is perfect and their support is great.

Hey Angilina, about how long ago was that? Most hosts, including HG, have something in place to prevent any domain on a shared server from using more than x% of CPU resources for more than x seconds. I don't remember what the figures are though, I think maybe something like 10% and 30 seconds.

Hello Clint,
I just checked my ticket regarding this issue and the last post was made on "Apr 6th, 2009". This was an annoying problem. My sites were down for so much time that their ranking in SERPs dropped: that was a big concern for me. All my affects were wasted just because of this downtime. This problem actually made me think to go to some other host but I have paid hosting charges for like 3 years, so that was also a reason why I had to stay :) After this last post by "Edit: Its Brent not Brunt :)", I did not saw such downtimes again.
Other than this one problem, I think Hostgator service is excellent. I really like their Live support.

Actually, I don't know the exact reason/cause of the problem. One of HG support person told me that some other site is the culprit for this issue. May be that person [culprit site owner] was a hacker/spammer or something like that :)

Oh my, that recent. I was wondering if it were like 1.5yrs ago when you first started with them. That should have never have happened, and I'm shocked it did. At the first sign of any problems, something should have immediately been done, regardless of what caused it. Someone really dropped the ball on that one. Usually it's someone running too many scripts or some that are too intensive, or high traffic gaming site, etc., etc., but whatever the reason it should have been stopped in minutes.
That same exact thing happened with my old hosts so much it too screwed up my SERP's. They were also idiotically blocking Gbot IP addresses!
Luckily I'm on a server at HG with very few others, it looks like I was the first one to be put on the server. I'm sure that won't last though. :-|
After this last post by "Brunt", I did not saw such downtimes again.
LOL. "Brent". Did they move you to another server?

Oops, its Brent :D
Actually, I asked few times to move my sites to another server but every time when they told me that there will be some downtime involved, I decided, not to move. I did not wanted to have any more downtimes so I just waited until they finally solved the issue but this solving did took more than a month. In this time period, I saw multiple downtimes at different times for different time intervals.
