Hi, I have a problem with an .asp page I am trying to edit. I am new to working with asp. As a matter of fact, I understand very little about it. I had a webmaster that also hosted my site and that fell through so here I am trying to understand it.
Everytime I edit any little thing on this page, http://tribeazure.com/Itemlist.asp it gives me an error when published. If any of the gurus could take a look at it and shed some light, I would appreciate it. Even changing the theme has affected it. I have a feeling its bad code.
Thanks! Nicci

My but thats an awfully long page...

Is FrontPage capable of dealing with ASP in any way? I haven't used FrontPage since about 1997, so I really don't know - but it is something to consider.

I didn't get an error on the page you referenced, but when I went to policy.htm the ASP code was just displayed on the page. Your webserver probably isn't set up to parse files with the extension .htm as ASP pages.

If you really want to, and if your host gives you access or is willing to do this for you, you can change this by going into the website's properties in IIS, go to the home directory tab, click on configure and add .htm as an extension using the same dll that the .asp extension currently uses.

The quicker, simpler solution is:
Try renaming the file policy.asp and see what happens.

Thanks, Chris. I'm not sure I presented the problem the correct way. This is the page, http://www.tribeazure.com/Itemlist.asp?SubGroup=Bracelets2%2DInlay+&MainGroup=Jewelry&CustID=844198932. It looks fine right now because I have replaced the page with my backup, but when I do any editing I get the error. It's like it goofs up a link or code. The policy.htm page displays correctly for me. Does it goofy on anyone else's computer? Does it still look that way on yours, Chris?

ChrisRC

When I initially visited your site, I was using Mozilla. Checking again with IE, it does appear to display correctly - but I don't think it is actually working correctly.

IE hides code within <%%> on an .htm page, whereas Mozilla just displays it - your server still isn't parsing the vbscript on the page with an .htm extension. Try going to one of these pages and viewing the source. The code is served up rather than parsed.

As for your error, what error are you getting exactly, and what code are you changing to what? It's hard to diagnose the problem without seeing the patient "Sick".

Like mentioned above,
If you have asp code on page with an extension other than .asp, it will not work properly.

When the server see .asp in the page name, the server runs it through a process that looks for asp code and processes it. If the page name ends in html or htm then the server sees the page as a normal web page and won't process it.

Front Page has been known to change page code.
The best way to handle a situation like this is hide the asp code on the page itself and call it using stored procedures from another file. If you using server side includes, the asp code for the most part will be hiden from you and all you will see is the parts of the webpage that are not pulling from your database.

If you can't do this, I recommend not editing any code that is writen between <% and %>. <% and %> are the opening and closing symbols for the asp code that your old web person created. Stay outside these symbols and front page should leave your code alone.

Hi Gentlemen,
Thank you for the help. I guess I have to wonder why my former webmaster created any .asp code on my policy page. I guess it is for cookies. Not sure. Anyway, what I also need to know is why when I change something as simple as the theme on the midlist.asp page, the whole code is off and does not publish correctly. Chris says he can't tell unless he can see it "sick", but I'm hesitant to goof with it because I don't want that page down for any length of time. Can you tell anything if I list the code here? I have looked and it doesn't seem like the things I'm trying to edit are between the <% and %>.

ChrisRC

You can try posting the code here. You can also post the "sick" page with a different name so we can go see it, but it doesn't appear within the navigational structure of your site (ie, itemlist2.asp).

Ok, here goes nothing...http://www.tribeazure.com/Itemlist3.asp?SubGroup=Accessories&MainGroup=Jewelry&CustID=72604639. This is my original itemlist.asp page but with a tweak. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Well, I don't know what change you made, but I do know what that error message is telling you.

In addition to that dim statement on line 52, there's another place where you dim the ItemID variable.

Chris, you are talking to a real novice. I am not familiar with how to fix that. Is it a matter of readjusting code somehow or does it involve actually changing it?

ChrisRC

Based on the error message I saw, line 52 of itemlist3.asp included a statement like:
"DIM ItemID"

At some other point in the code that statement probably appears again. You can only have one DIM statement for each variable.

I think it may also be possible, if you're not using option explicit, to get that error if your DIM statement is later in the code than your first use of the variable.

You can try posting the code and I'll see if I spot the problem...

Hi Chris,
I'm going to post the whole page on the next post just because I'm not sure what is what. One thing seems odd. That is that there is two "include cart" codes at the bottom. Thanks!

Well seeing this code has at least strengthened my resolve never to think about using FrontPage again...

Obviously none of this code includes a "DIM ItemID", so it must be in one or more of your includes. The two includes of cart.txt could be the culprit, or there could be a reason it's being included twice. You'd have to examine what functionality is in those includes and how it is being implemented.

"FP_ASP -- ASP Automatically generated by a Frontpage Component. Do not Edit." Does anyone else reading this thread know what means? Is frontpage actually trying to provide the ASP scripting? Is it possible that FP is adding duplicate code each time it publishes?

Personally, I think you should reconsider using a professional. Save the complications of FrontPage and get a system that allows you to just add/edit the stuff you actually need to add/edit without worrying about the code.

A professional was what was needed in the first place.

This is the code that works if you get bored some day and want to compare it. Thanks for checking this stuff for me.

Nicci,

Looks like your web guy left you in a real bind. It looks like you need a cms(content management system) to update your website. You are probably going to have to find a frontpage guru to fix your problem.

I have been developing for almost 10 years now and I have never touched front page because of it's proprietariness. Front page pretty much demands that you make edits using that program and no other. We found that once you edit a front page created page in another program, front page doesn't want to touch it again or redraws it into something totally different than what you had originally.

I wish you the best of luck fixing it. The only way one of us can help is to view all the files that are included in this front page mess.

Here is an example of a jewelry site I built last year. It is totally databased and ecommerce ready. Take a look

Take a look

Hi Duncan!
Beautiful work on the site. My goal is to learn db work. My former webmistress was just learning .asp so I'm not surprised I have some issues now that she has been dismissed. We do have a "rent-a-techie" service available in Tucson. I guess I will give then a call. I do have a working version of this page. I think part of the problem has to do with text being in the db area that doesn't belong there.
What program do you use for web design? Thanks for the info! Nicci

My partner usually designs the sites but in the case of Maia Jewelry we were brought in as consultants for another design firm.

We do our base design in Adobe Photoshop then my partner cuts up the images and put them all together for the web in dreamweaver. Once my partner cuts the site up, I then come in and add all the programming aspects of it.

If you think it is a database entry issue, you should be able to go in manually and update your data.

I do all the editing on my site, but the db stuff confuses me. I am trying to learn it, but it's quite complicated to me so it's going to take me awhile. I had originally wanted someone to look at this code and see if anything popped out at them, but I guess all the code has to be viewed. I didn't realize frontpage was such a pain until I started perusing the forums. Nicci
