I am looking for a new hosting provider for some small sites and need a recommendation. I've got 5 domains that are all fairly new and thus little to no traffic. I want to host them all on a single server to save money and make it easier to manage. I prefer a VPS plan because I get dedicated resources but not the management need of a dedicated server. However, I need a plan that includes root command line access (ssh) as well as the ability to have multiple IP addresses on a single VPS. It should also be running on the LAMP platform (linus, apache, mysql, php). Some kind of web control panel (e.g., Plesk) would be nice too. Finally, I would like access to tech support via telephone or live chat, for free, when I have a problem. I used to get all of this from my old hosting provide for around $40 / month, but they have been purchased by someone else and their old plans are going away.
I thought this was a pretty simply request but I've spent a few hours looking through providers and can't seem to find anyone with this kind of plan. The vast majority limit to 1 IP, and the others I looked at either didn't offer ssh access or looked like they were being run by some guy in his basement. Any suggestions? Thanks,
Bill

Instead of asking for a VPS - try looking at the "reseller" packages ... here's a hostgator link that I think has what you want... try other companies too
Reseller Hosting Plans - Web Hosting Packages with cPanel and WHM (http://www.hostgator.com/resellers.shtml)

Hi Bill,
I have been through this exact same process. I even tried out a few before finally finding one that provides what I need. These guys are great:
WiredTree - Managed Dedicated Servers | Managed VPS Hosting | Fully Managed Web Hosting (http://www.wiredtree.com)
(no affiliate link as they don't have one)
I am on the VPS512 plan, which comes with CPanel/WHM preloaded. I also added the WHMCS ($10/mth) which allows for invoicing / billing and semi-automated account setup.
This plan comes with 4 IP's. I use 2 for nameservers, and use the other 2 for the domains I host / manage.
Their support is excellent. They literally answer support tickets in minutes and get issued resolved super-quick.
Feel free to ask me any questions to save yourself some time.
Cheers,
Calvin

I would highly recommend Liquid Web, you can google them. I know they have VPS services, not sure on their pricing, but their service has been very good.

I've been in this game a long time, and I can say, with the utmost confidence, I've never worked with a host more capable and responsive as LiquidWeb. We migrated to their servers approximately 3 months ago, and could not be happier.
Response time on support tickets is unreal. Typically have some sort of answer and someone working on the ticket within 10-15 minutes. I would seriously recommend looking into them.
Search twitter to see what people are saying about LW. Their support truly is heroic.

I second that. Been using Bytemark for a few months myself and very happy with the support.
I am using their vhost system on one VPS and Ubuntu Hardy on another.
UK based as the original poster said.

I did the same research myself. I came up with HostDime.com They don't seem to be any worse off then any other server providers. They have all you are looking for, from IP's to dedicated servers, to free phone or online help. They work out of a good size data center in Florida, and they are available 24/7
I like em, and would recomend them to anyone,,, I know they have cpanel software, not sure about the plesk, but I would be willing to bet they do. They do have ssh and other access points.
If you do check em out, tell em Tony V with totalinternetadvertising.com sent you... if you want :) lol

I use hostgator.com for my reseller hosting.
Very reasonably priced, nice control panel (cpanel)
unlimited domains, multiple ip addresses available
though they'll charge 2.00 per IP per month, still
reasonable though. I like them.
I highly recommend them.

Since you are talking about a few sites with small amounts of traffic, you could throw together an old system or pick up an old desktop from a yard sale for $50. The software you need is of course free. You likely have broadband already. You then have 100% control of your server, how it is configured, what software you want to use etc.
I've been running my own server for 11 years. Sure it is a bedroom setup, but it is MY bedroom. I even setup my own email, DNS, file server and database server. My highest traffic has been 12,000 page views an hour. I can choose to throw as much time and money at it as I want or I can choose to ignore it for a while if I need to. So I lost a closet to a rack and I have a dedicated A/C ducting cold air into the closet. I couldn't see paying $500 a month to rent a small 1 room office across town. I can say that any small business would love to have my rack sitting in their IT room.
When I started I didn't even know what a DNS was but I was determined to figure it out. Now I could setup shop as an ISP if I wanted to. I don't want to deal with the support calls or I'd do it.

Don't underestimate those guys running hosting companies out of their basement - after all, if your original guy and whoever bought him out was that small, they wouldn't have changed plans with no regard for individual customers' needs. I run a hosting company out of my home and I guarantee my customers get service that big companies just can't offer.
Hostgator - good choice.

the price point on Plesk (Parallels now) is hard to get now as they almost tripled their prices last year. however you can get cpanel or plesk at Atjeu.com, I've had great service there, several VPS servers and a couple dedicated. You can say Ron from Orionsweb (owhosting) referred you if you like, no clue if they give me anything for it though lol..
We have other servers with other providers, but not VPS so I don't know enough on them to recommend.

You can save money by ordering a multiple domains shared hosting. Choose a good vendor, you can be fine. Then upgrading to VPS when needed. We have many customers doing that way.
I prefer a VPS plan because I get dedicated resources but not the management need of a dedicated server. However, I need a plan that includes root command line access (ssh)
In fact, VPS still requires management skill, much the same as a real dedicated server. SSH access can be provided without root level, however, so you might review your needs? What do you want to do in ssh environment?

I found Reseller Hosting - Business Hosting - Joomla Hosting | Rochen Host (http://www.rochenhost.com/) and they are good!
And the cost is what you are looking for.

West Host also offers what you are looking for - VPS, SSH access, multiple domains and unique IP addresses ( about $ 2 per month per IP). If you are comfortable setting up your Apache HTTP server, their self managed plan may be suitable for you at a very reasonable price.
I am not connected in any way with them except as a satisfied user.

I have used *NIX platforms since 1988. When I started my own business in 1999, I found a company called, Datarealm. They have since created a subsidiary called, Rackmounted. They have the tools, pricing, and service that rival most. I'd recommend giving them a look.

We use to use HostMySite.com. They have Linux VPS for $30 month. I think they gave you a choice of Plesk or cPanel. Very nice uptime and support, I would use them again if I was into 3rd party VPS solutions.
Subsystems... I like your style! I am venturing into having my own hardware. Bought a used server on the cheap... I am currently configuring to run 5 VPS web servers and have a rack spot ready to go. Should be challenging and fun!

While I personally like the idea of a personal web server, having run several on my own just to learn and get used to administering LAMP sites top to bottom, I would add one word of caution - web servers are not well tolerated by ISPs, who consider installing any type of server a violation of their terms of use for residential accounts. I would check with the ISP before installing a web server. Generally, there will be several caveats - the sites must be non-commercial, they must meet a bandwidth limit, etc. - if they are allowed at all. Otherwise, your ISP may require you to upgrade to a business account.

I'm always skeptical of "answers in minutes" responses, but being I'm looking at new solutions, I tried your suggestion, and contacted them.
They responded "in minutes" and had a complete answer to each of my pre-sales questions.
I haven't started using their services, but so far, I'm impressed.
Thanks for the recommendation.

parkinghost has 10 a month w/ip for each account, you can house all 4 accounts under there account panel and utilize cPanel excellerated. = 40 month for 4 accounts plus 5 domains parked each = 20 additional domains parked under those accounts. All can be on one server.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I actually made a selection shortly after the first replies came in, but I was waiting until I found out how it actually went before replying. Since I am in the US, the UK option was out for me. I took a look at hostgator and liquidweb and felt liquidweb was more what I needed. I signed up with them and so far they have been fabulous. I'm probably going to move all of my hosting to them over the coming months if things continue to go as well as they have so far. I will say their system does seem to be set-up more for the advanced beginner/intermediate level, so you need to do things like setup nameservers, install SSL certs, etc. However, their tech support people have been great about helping when I've gotten stuck and response times are great.
The other thing that I found is that they actually monitor my systems to make sure apache is running, and automatically get alerted within 5 minutes if there is a problem. My old host never did this and I had to come up with workarounds myself. The prices at liquidweb are higher for a single VPS, but I got so much more over there that I only needed one account, so in the end it'll be cheaper and easier for me than having 6 separate VPS accounts at the old place.
Also, I did not mean to offend anyone that runs a server out of their house. If it works for you, great. Personally I don't have the skills and I travel too much for it to be an effective method for me.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and quick replies.
