I've tried them all. I used AVG for nearly 2 years.
I'm back to the newest version of Norton and I really like it so far. It does not hog system resources, performs excellent updates and gets along well with Vista.
Norton gets my vote.

Have tried Norton, Avast, Avira and AVG and would recommend Avira, its very light doesn't hog resources and have found it to be the best for picking up viruses. AVG is also an excellent anti virus.

I'm a heavy surfer, I surf all over the Internet, and that includes surfing adult entertainment oriented websites on a sporadic basis. I've had some computer technicians try and talk me into using Norton's all inclusive security suite. And I've read reviews on C-Net and elsewhere from people who curse at Norton. I have no opinion of Norton.
I've been using Avast going on three years now. Avast is and has been on top of the Conflicker issue. They addressed that issue specifically and sent a message to each and every user about how they're aware of Conflicker back when Conflicker was casting fear worldwide. Be it Conflicker or any other virus, Avast has never let me down. Thank you, Avast, for the great job you do in protecting my love machine. :D

I'll go along with Avast - it is less hassle than many others. But Opera as a browser has also cut down my need for extra security.

The more browsers you have in your stable, the better. Currently I use IE, FF, and Chrome. Chrome gathers a lot of dust because it's not compatible with the 8th wonder of the world: Roboform. Not compatible with Roboform as of today, anyway. Roboform is fantastic freeware. It's a password manager deluxe. It also has Safenotes, a utility that allows you to keep notes and create folders.
Soon I'll be installing another browser, Maxthon. Opera is intriguing, though I know that it's not compatible with Roboform.
BTW, if anyone reading this is a big IE user, you need to take a long, hard look at IE7 Pro. It too is freeware, and it gets a lot of raves. It turns IE into a little like Firefox. And great news: like Firefox, IE7 Pro has an AdBlocker just like Firefox does. I think there's a version for IE8, you'll have to check. If not, I'm sure the engineers at IE7 Pro are working on building one :D

i use Norton Internet Security 2009. its so light, athat it undid all of Norton's notorious reputation as a memory hog and a computer-slower.
But novex's is right. I liitle precaution + a watchful eye plus a firewall (like zone alarm pro, for extra security) is more than enough. Minor ones can be detected in the startup items an msconfig.

Avast is miles ahead of AVG in terms of ease of use.
With AVG, there's the constant nag screens and alerts telling you that the program database files need updating or that there's a new version of the software available.
Avast requires you to register to get a free software key but that's it. When you've installed it, the program updates itself as required and lets you know what it has completed an update.
Love it!

Symantec AntiVirus
Also use Ad-Aware often :)
And yes I know it's not anti-virus, just handy and helpful when I've got kids on my computer.

I have been an AVG user for 3 or so years and satisfied, but having read the above posts and looking at Avast web site I am going to give them a try (it includes spyware). AVG is good, but the constant update screens etc are a hassle. As a satisfied AVG user, I will let you know my response to Avast. Thanks.

Tried Avast on one PC, I've since switched the other machine over from AVG Free.
Hated the manual updates required in AVG Free... Avast rocks.

Kaspersky is simply the best AV. It uses less resources from your PC and gives the powerful protection.

I use to be a huge AVG fan - until it became a resource hog and pain in the neck. It's still a great program but I'm of the mind set, "Less is more." The Less I have on my computer the More I like it.
I went back to using HiJackThis on a weekly basis. Deleted MacAfee, avoided Nortons anti-virus, and keep Ad-Aware and Spybot S & D around. I don't worry about malware on this computer - it visits 6 websites -
School website
School Email
Work email
Ebay
Webproworld
My banks website
My other computer though goes every where and has nothing on it (malware fighting wise). If it gets sick it gets formated. Life is so much simpler now. :)

I like kapersky is a good one, avg is not that memory intensive. Honestly, i hate using anti virus or firewalls heh.. But i do find myself using Panda for windows 7 which is one of the few ones that works.

As most of the PC users wants a free resource, so I think AVG has got many downloads. But security wise, I would prefer a paid AV like Kaspersky.

AVG always and recommend it to my customers. It's rare for anyone using it to contact me about a virus problem (unless they've been exceptionally daft).
I have countless examples of serious fixing of PC's for customers where the preinstalled anti-virus has expired after its twelve month trial and then refuses to uninstall because its components are out of date and to update them you need to renew your license. For the average user I consider this a blackmail attempt. They often resort to trying to delete stuff, ignore warnings or install other av software over the top...
Other well known systems have refused to uninstall until, after long painstaking searches, I found that Symantec provide their own special tool for removing particularly stubborn examples of their own crappy software. I don't see them advertising that.
@innominds: you should be using the paid version of AVG.
