Hi
Can anyone recommend a reliable cheap hosting service? Looking for a package for under £25 per year. Windows.
Thanks in advance

for a cheap/affordable server, how can you really beat godaddy on that one?

I don't even think GoDaddy is that cheap...

Go Daddy Windows hosting starts at around 6 bucks a month...

$74 Canadian dollars = $41 British pounds

Most other hosts are just as good and offer lower prices than GoDaddy...

Every single one of these linux hosting services is less than GoDaddy...

Linux Web Hosting Top List - Cheap but Powerful and Reliable Hosting Solution! (http://www.webhostingsearch.com/linux-web-hosting.php)

Here's a windows host which starts at half the price of what GoDaddy is offering...

48 Canadian dollars = $26 British pounds

3Essentials: Shared Web Hosting. cPanel, PLESK, Linux, Windows, PHP, ASP.NET,MySQL, MSSQL (http://www.3essentials.com/shared-web-hosting.asp)

I've never used them... but... I'm sure there are many different ones who are way cheaper than GoDaddy... GoDaddy is expensive... I think they are still paying off those super bowl ads...

I can't recommend any of these hosts but if you look through Shared Hosting Offers (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4) there's usually some good offers and a search of the forums there should give you an idea of problem ones.

Thank you for your advice. Has anyone used 123-reg?

They would call me up from time to time and the last time they called, they gave a yearly @ $36 per year (USD). At the time the monthly I was paying was $3.99 per month (USD) which is $48 per year.....maybe they increased their prices in the interim.

Even at $6 per month, that is 19.7 cents per day.

At least with GoDaddy you know that they're large enough that even that small amount is seemingly able to fund their operations. Anything less than that and I start to wonder if the company is going to be around four months from now (and it did happen to me once).......

I agree... You also have to wonder what kind of costs a company so large has to endure considering they are appealing to the lowest common denominator. Large are just as susceptible to folding as smaller ones. There are perhaps more smaller companies then lets say, Enrons... maybe that is the difference?

There is a huge amount of customer service they have to deal with. They also have a legion of enemies to deal with as well. The little guys can do it more economically...

It's not the hardware that costs money... it's the customers who cost money... jmo...

Anyways... this is supposed to be an unbiased review of hosting companies... Only started to visit recently...

Also... it has happened to me before as well... I used to scrape the bottom of the barrel for the absolute cheapest possible host. I cannot claim that I ever watched them "go under" and disappear... nor was my service ever permanently cut off due to a bankruptcy... However... the customer service and downtime was something I could never deal with again...

I have had good results with HostGator. You might check them out.

The thing about GoDaddy is that I can pack on as many websites as I want to (and domains) into 1 hosting package. I can crank out simple 1 or 2 page HTML sites in minutes with free hosting (yeh yeh, I get the GoDaddy logo stuff at the top but for those pages I don't care).

For what I get, I've found GoDaddy to be the best BUT they have some severe limitations for serious programmers. So the problem comes down to whether to remove limitiations but get less overall for more money or work with the limits and pay pennies per site?

Actually that is a good comment, it might help if you briefly describe those limitations.

"The thing about GoDaddy is that I can pack on as many websites as I want to (and domains) into 1 hosting package"Are you sure? I think you are talking about their unlimited plan at $18.47/mo.

I would imagine some restrictons you might come across is how much resources you can eat up. For example... They are selling additional Email Market software for use with their servers at C$24.64/mo That's only 5,000 emails a month.

That's 1cent per 2 email !

If someone had the audacity to send out 50,000 emails... perhaps they would get hit with a bill for $1,000 dollars?

( That is worse than a bank charging me money for the pleasure of having an account with them... jmo... )

I can tell you now that I am sending out significantly more than 5,000 per month and well under 50,000 ( and paying no additional costs ). I cannot confirm that go daddy restricts your website accounts in that manner. I can only imagine so. I myself have run into problems with over tapping resources within servers I make use of, but I am doing business with a medium sized company. They are prone to shoot me and email and ask me to do something about the problem where as I would imagine GoDaddy would just cut you off. Years ago the budget hosting plans would pretty much lock down your capabilities in any which way they possibly could. I am sure things have gotten better.

I do remember trying a password guesser out on my database once using a budget hosting account. I clocked something like 1GB worth of traffic. At the time... that cost me $80.00. That's a lot to pay for absolutely nothing.

In any event... the dedicating hosting plans from GoDaddy have consistently bad reviews. I would not use them for anything except your own website. It's my personal choice not to host other people's businesses on thier servers. It's just my preference from having been through enough crap in the past to not want to deal with it again.

According to these people... I am correct to think GoDaddy restricts outbound mail campaigns unless your paying for it...

http://webdesign.ghhutch.com/tech_articles/2006/08/godaddy_php_restrictions.php

It says they restrict...

Warning: fopen, fwrite, fread, file, fpassthru, file, mail, opendir, readdir, closedir() has been disabled for security reasons ...

I could not live without some of those functions... I am sure most content management systems simply will not work without them... especially the mail function.

This is another major restriction... file_get_contents()

Without sounding too spammish I can recommend hostgator. I have been using them for a year now and I have had nothing but excellent service from them. I got one of their shared plans and am very happy with it. Fast customer service, and the server has always been up and fast.

Sending bulk emails is a problem on a LOT of hosts. They are worried about getting nailed because of a spammer sending millions out.

I haven't seen limits tho on godaddy for how many you can send, just on how many mailboxes you can have.

Anyway, I started with coldfusion hosting with Godaddy. They lock down things like connecting to webservices and such using coldfusion. Why? No idea and I haven't gotten a good response out of them for it.

If you sign up for a domain name with them, you get a free site that has their logo and advertising at the top. If you are just trying to crank out a landing page for affiliate marketing or some such, it is great.

I'm currently payinf $20 per year and for that I have CPanel and tonnes of tools as well as RV site builder.

I think it's value for money.
