Valerie, you can just email webmasters of related websites, if you have a unique website many will definitely be up for a link exchange

The best approach would be to write articles and submit to good directories. Its worth the effort and saves time than to ask for webmasters for a link exchange. And if you do it right, you can see your SERP improving in search engines.
