These questions about Canada were purportedly posted on an International Tourism Website:

1. Q: I have never seen it warm on TV, so how do the plants grow? (UK)
A: We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around watching them die.

2. Q: Will I be able to see Polar Bears in the street? (USA)
A : Depends how much you've been drinking.

3. Q: I want to walk from Vancouver to Toronto - can I follow the railroad tracks? (Sweden)
A: Sure, it's only four thousand miles -- take lots of water.

4. Q: Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Canada? (Sweden)
A: So its true what they say about Swedes.

5. Q: It is imperative that I find the names and addresses of places to contact for a stuffed beaver. (Italy)
A: Let's not touch this one.

6. Q: Are there any ATMs (cash machines) in Canada? Can you send me a list of them in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Halifax? (UK)
A: What did your last slave die of?

7. Q: Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Canada? (USA)
A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe. Ca-na-da is that big country to your North . . . oh forget it. Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night in Calgary. Come naked.

8. Q: Which direction is North in Canada? (USA)
A: Face south and then turn 180 degrees. Contact us when you get here and we'll send the rest of the directions.

9. Q: Can I bring cutlery into Canada? (UK)
A: Why? Just use your fingers like we do.

10. Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys' Choir schedule? (USA)
A: Aus-tri-a is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y, which is....oh forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Tuesday night in Vancouver and in Calgary, straight after the hippo races. Come naked.

You're welcome :-)

The one about "can I walk from Vancouver to Toronto" struck a chord with me... years ago, when I was a boy, my grandfather visited from England... we were living in Montreal at the time and he wanted to make a day trip to Niagara Falls... even at the age of 10, that was a revealing lesson to me about different my world was from many people living in the UK/Europe.

A friend in NY recently said to me "I have a conference in Montreal, maybe while I'm there I can visit you." (in Vancouver, BC)
She's only 6 hours drive from Montreal - 6 hours - 6 days drive ... no difference.
The equivalent would be my telling her, "I have a conference in California, maybe I'll stop in and say Hi to you - in New York."

When I was 6 (and in Montreal) I thought it was 10 miles to Switzerland. I outgrew that though... :-)

I really like the 'ou' sound Canadians make. I hear it in 'out' and such words. It also helps me quickly distinguish a Canadian from an USA -er.

Speakig of Polar bears Minstrel:
A little baby polar bear kept distracting his dad who was catching salmon.
"Am I a black bear dad?" "No son you're a polar bear now leave me to my work."
5 minutes later "dad am I am brown bear?" " No son, you're a polar bear, told you already, now go off and play."
"Dad am I a grissly bear?" "NO Son! You're a polar bear."
"Hey dad, if I'm a polar bear then why am I so bloody cold!"

Why do a lot of Canucks think they can speak French?Canadian French is like American English.

As for JMac's American friend I have noticed Americans don't seem to mind long drives, probably because they use the car more than any other country, I mean who else has drive through banks and drive through shops?

Actually, that's sort of an in-joke... only maritimers actually pronounce it that way...

Speaking of Polar bears Minstrel:

A polar bear walks into a bar, strolls up to the bartender, and says, "Give me a gin....... ...... ..... ..... ..... and tonic."

The bartender says, "Okay, here you go... but why the long pause?"

The bear looks down at his feet and says, "I dunno... I've always had 'em."

Greyhawk -

sssshhhhhh!
Modesty and sedate quiet are the Canadian way, eh?

For information on the 1812 war and who won it, see the ever popular forum at the History Channel:
http://boards.historychannel.com/forum.jsp?forum=94
There are some very amusing takes on this war - it all depends on what history book one chooses to read. Considering it's been over for a long time, compared to some other wars, I can't believe people find time to write such lengthy, libelous posts intended to inflame and insult.

And for goodness sakes, stop telling people we are arsonists! :-)

Canada's official sport, according to some history books, was invented by Native peoples. (It's all still contested, right?)
So, how much credit do we get - or lose?

And speaking of credit - do I get any for this?
Requesting credit for something? Not very Canadian of me either, eh?

What is the Official National Sport of Canada?

"Although it has never been officially declared, the national sport of Canada is popularly believed to be lacrosse, a game first played by North American Indians. But no official recognition could ever make lacrosse as popular in Canada as the game Canadians love most: ice hockey."

"Lacrosse was first declared the National Game of Canada in 1859. Although the original government records have never been located, hundreds of references cite this event, from renowned encyclopediae, books on Canada's history, government communications and educational textbooks to newspaper and other media accounts dating back in history. One such reference occurs in Scribner's Monthly, Volume 14, May-October 1877. 'The game of Lacrosse, which was adopted as the national game of Canada on the 1st of July, 1859, the first Dominion Day...'. The game of Lacrosse was granted this status in the 1800s, not merely because of its popularity or economics, but because it has made significant and lasting contributions to the history and development of this nation, its people, and the sport community. Indeed, Lacrosse is known as Canada's National Game throughout the world."

Who won the war of 1812?

No one: "The War of 1812 is one of the forgotten wars of the United States. The war lasted for over two years, and while it ended much like it started; in stalemate; it was in fact a war that once and for all confirmed American Independence. The offensive actions of the United States failed in every attempt to capture Canada. On the other hand, the British army was successfully stopped when it attempted to capture Baltimore and New Orleans."

How did the White house get it's name?

"The White House represents the executive branch. Every president except George Washington lived here (but Washington chose the site). Designed by Irishman James Hoban, the building was burned by the British in 1814. Rebuilt and painted white to cover the burn marks, it gained the name of the White House."

CFRA's Lowell Green had a good one he used to ask on his radio show...made me laff...."Where is the St Lawrence Seaway?" Now no peeking...off the top of your head? ;-)

Its funny that Canadians remember a war considering their peacekeepers ;-) But then again....if it involves the US its amazing how much gets remebered !! ;-)

And living on the border of Quebec....hard to guage what language is spoken in Canada...or should I say...what language is 'allowed' to be spoken ;-) All I know is that they never understood Aussie! :-)

In regards to sport...LOL...only sport I participated in was trying to stay on my feet on ice! That and snow shovelling! :-)

I've heard it's healthy to take a break from watching the news every once in a while. When the rains came, I assumed it was "same old, same old" for here on The Sunshine Coast (which has its own weather system, completely separate from that of the rest of BC) - it always rains for 10 days at a time in October here!

So I flipped on the news last night, after reading your post GreyHawk, and if Tofino gets it worse than the rest of BC when it comes to rains, I really feel for you! It's hard to believe evacuations for flooding could come so soon after evacuations for forest fires.

Good luck and stay dry!

Sooo true! <grin>

But on another bilingual note:
A patron in a Montreal restaurant turned on a tap in the washroom and got scalded. “This is an outrage,” he complained. “The faucet marked ‘C’ gave me boiling water.” “But, Monsieur, ‘C’ stands for chaude – French for hot. You should know that if you live in Montreal.” “Wait a minute,” roared the patron. “The other tap is also marked ‘C’.” “Of course,” said the manager. “It stands for cold. After all, Montreal is a bilingual city.”

Did anyone see the special "Talking to Americans" I think it played last year...
The reporter goes around asking Americans questions about Canada and Canadian policies. They went to different campuses..such as Harvard, Princeton etc. so they weren't just asking the 'ordinary joes'

The questions were along the lines of "do you think it's right to send in ground troops in Saskatchewan," or getting people to support and sign a petition opposing the "Canadian tradition of placing senior citizens on northern ice flows and leaving them to perish."

I can't remember all the questions but it was really funny :)

A while back, after a 13-hour flight from Amsterdam to Seattle, semi-comatose from a lack of sleep and standing in this ever-lengthening line to get through customs, I was surprised to see that Canadian citizens were permitted to waft through the section set-aside for US citizens.

Is this because, in spite of the almost continual Mickey-taking (NAFTA aside) the US actually likes Canada and her citizens, or to make sure they can get out, and back to Canada, as rapidly as possible?

It ought to be compulsory viewing south of your border.
It made me proud (as an Australiasian ie NZer and Aussie) to have shared so much with Canada through the Commonwealth.
I Love Canadian movies
I love Mashall McLuhan(RIP)and so many other Canadian intellectuals.(Suzuki excepted - I met him and found him arrogant and up himself)
I love it that Canadians can do things without claiming to be the best in the world.
And I'm pleased that the Mounties haven't been taken over by the gay lobby!
I like it that Canadian 'get' irony.
I think the Canadian rugby team will soon be very competetive.

Well, before I say this, let me state emphatically that I am definitely NOT anti-American (and by the way, in spite of the vocal zeal of some of our citizens and politicians [shudder], I don't believe that the majority of Canadians are anti-American either)...

Nonetheless, the true reason that Canadians wear flags on their backpacks when travelling abroad is to avoid being mistaken for Americans. In my student days, I was often verbally assaulted and insulted by people who assumed I was from the U.S., until I informed them that I was Canadian - then, their attitudes changed 180 degrees...

If I had a chance to travel somewhere for friendship then it would be to Canada. You could all take me oot and aboot to show me the sights.

I think you would find most Canadians to be a friendly people... then again, I've heard the same thing said of Australians and New Zealanders... and when I have travelled in the States, I've found it to be true of Americans too (well, maybe not in New York City - they hate everybody there)...

Bit off the topic of aboot Canada but NZers are one of the most friendly people anywhere. They have an understatement attitude, very different from the brash Aussies and their politics reflects this...they're probably the only Govt around making principled decisions. Also they have a natural religiosity which I think stems from the power of nature. Nature dominates in NZ, one must look up to mountains and there is a reverence which I really like.

As Michael mentioned - Bowling for Columbine should be mandatory viewing. My one (ONE) bone to pick is that the film was made after the Taber (Alberta) school shootings and he neglected to mention that in his bit aboot Canada.
Either the violence is here, too, or it is slowly creeping in, riding on the back of the imported entertainment we get here.
And - 7 million guns here? I thought WOW - but then again, when I bought (and sold) a truck here on the peaceful (did anyone see 22 Minutes last week?) West Coast, it had a gun rack - a feature I didn't make use of.
I DO carry bear spray - and a big can of it - but it really is for bears! But, I'm not in the city so, no, you won't see one walking down the street.

You'd think not, but in the past month a mother and cub showed up in the streets of Kanata (now a suburb of Greater Ottawa) and freaked everyone out there for about 3 hours...

When I lived in B.C., it was mostly in the mountain communities of Kitimat, Kemano, that region - up there, we more than once opened the front door to find a bear sorting through our garbage cans... One night coming home from Cubs (so I would have been perhaps 8 or 9) I spotted one coming toward me down the road: I turned and ran as fast as I could and finally got up the courage to look behind me, only to see off in the distance that bear running as fast as s/he could in the opposite direction away from me. That of course earned me the Indian name of "Runs-With-Bears"... :-)

You were doing okay there until the end... the Leafs as the greatest hockey team? "squeeze me? baking powder?" (Wayne's World reference there) When exactly was the last time the Leafs actually won anything?

Years ago, in the 70s in Kingston, after a Leafs-Canadiens game, the Queen's University engineers hung a huge banner off the side of a residence that said, "Once again the Leafs snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory!" - that pretty much describes the Leafs since about 1951... :-)

So, even though Lacrosse is our national sport, we easily slip into the most common perception of Canadians as hockey-lovin' fanatics.

We actually have two official sports by law - always has been field lacrosse and as of 1994, also ice hockey - http://www.pch.gc.ca/progs/sc/legislation/n-16_e.cfm .
Most popular form these days, however, is the derivative of the field form played in hockey arenas and just called 'Lacrosse'. Two violent sports if ever there was.

Our national animal is the 'beaver' which is not the only association one makes with that term and is in fact quite rude.

Our national flower(?) is the maple leaf - coloured red, the colour of anger.

We fight over which language to use so we have to have two of those as well.

Everyone else thinks we are so polite and mild mannerred. What do we have to do to get some fear out of them?

To greyhawk I say " Yes, I suppose we look pretty mild by comparison. At least someone had enough sense to make them quit using the initials 'WWF' for their national sport. (*NOTE - baseball is a "pasttime", not a sport. mgmnt)

(*NOTE - baseball is a "pasttime", not a sport. mgmnt) Thats a low blow, Golf is more of a sport than Pro-wrestling. Pro-wrestling is not our national sport at best it's just bad acting. I cant argue about your baseball comment. It's one of the most boring sports (sorry mikmik, I mean "pasttime" ;)) there is and they have to have a seven game championship.

"Squeeze me? Baking Powder?"

For the moment, talking only about spectator sports (because playing some sports/games is different), baseball is not nearly as boring as:

lawn bowling
cricket
golf
synchronized swimming
soccer
polo
dwarf tossing
golf
Greco-Roman wrestling
the luge
golf
table tennis
billiards
badminton
synchronized swimming

(yeah, I know... but some deserved two votes for the most boring spectator "sports" ever)

Minstrel, I stand corrected. I had no idea there were so many sports worse than baseball. I guess I just notice baseball because its on the major networks here during prime time.

Here is another one to add to your list of boring sport
Rock, Paper, Scissors (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=573&e=1&u=/nm/rockpaper_dc)

LOL - Do you by any chance listen to the Jim Rome show on radio ("Have a take - don't suck")? He was going on about Rock Paper Scissors professionals the other day... (He also has a TV show called Rome is burning but I've never seen it.)

Out... Rack me! :-)

Ya, I heard about that.
Oh, great! ... I can see it now,

"Toronto, The Rock, Paper, Scissors capital of the world"

If anyone says that to me, I'll say I'm from Ottawa, okay Minstrel ??

And the London team was accompanied by their 'team doctor'?? craaaazy

When you think about it, it isn't any more ridiculous than "Reality TV"...

from our nations capital (Toronto's best kept secret) comes this:
lawn bowling
cricket
golf
synchronized swimming
soccer
polo
dwarf tossing
golf
Greco-Roman wrestling
the luge
golf
table tennis
billiards
badminton
synchronized swimming.

I was going to say that you forgot "Darts"
but then I remembered the scintillating commentary.

That's the problem these days, people don't watch enough TV anymore. There is more of an 'educational'
focus - exhibit by such as 'Arena Football' and the groundbreaking, avant garde series with the subtle name of "Slamball" in which basketball is played with trampolines and players wearing full protective gear.

I have one other but I don't want to make rocky1 mad.
Gotta go now, the 'Yorkton Shears' are in town to take on the 'Kelowna Gravel'.

You do realize, mikmik, that you are THIS close to certifiable? :-)

You are very kind, minstrel, but I cannot take full credit. You see, although I'm the one working the keyboard, I just write what my puppy-dog tells me to.

Oh, I'm sorry - "Mr." puppy-dog. [o;

Now behave yerself Mik!

In that you opened the proverbial door on my object of passion, be advised that it is not uncommon for the participants thereof to realize fully the irony of pitting their well educated selves and their thousands and thousands of dollars of equipment, against a critter with a brain the size of a pea, and gettin whupped!

Of course we've all heard down here, that the fish aren't quite as smart up there, is why so many folks from down here go up there to try and catch them all!

Or, was it because you guys had so much beer? Not sure! (I can't imagine that though, having enjoyed the company of a few of your countrymen in the local taverns!! And I might add, it was quite likely one of the most outrageous times I've ever had in the bar with a total stranger! I laughed till I cried.) };~)
