Hi,

I have a social bookmarking website which will soon have 1000 registered users, it gets more 10 new sign ups per day. Most members submit their blog posts or some news but not many vote or comment on other stories. I understand that most join to submit stuff but I do want to create a build a community.

Any ideas of how to make the site more community oriented?

Thanks in advance

The site does not look like a community, usually a community has a common something or other.
To create community traffic you probably need a common theme that every visitor can relate to, you need like minded members that will communicate with each other. I do not think you have that.

The benefits of having a like minded community are huge, members keep calling back. like minded traffic keeps turning up.

My suggestion is to pick a theme, point your content towards the specific group you are targeting.

once the site gets more established you will probably find that communities emerge who will comment and vote on each others posts to bump them up- on the one had they are gaming the system, but on the other it can make for a much more active site.

You can promote it with your community/group in different social networking sites that will help you to get users who are more close to you.
