What are the subdomains?

What are the uses of them and is it necessary to use them ?

Sub Domains are the urls that some people consider home pages and others consider inside pages. The win win agreement to the lable of these web pages is the term "sub domain."

Sub domains can look like tips.hosting.com or hosting.com/member/tips.html , where the later is a free hosting page.

The one who maintains the subdomain can either be the maintainer of the main domain or another party who aquired the subdomain through free hosting.

Any other thought in understanding Sub Domains?

If we take one of my domains as an example, tolranet.com, then forums.tolranet.com would is a subdomain of tolranet.com as is support.tolranet.com and status.tolranet.com.

A subdomain is simply a lower domain within the domain name hierarchy. Therefore tolranet is also a subdomain of the toplevel domain (TLD) com.

A subdomain can point to the same server as the parent domain or a separate server but normally the content on the subdomain is independent from the parent.

The reason I have forums.tolranet.com and support.tolranet.com as subdomains rather than in folders is that I can keep each isolated in its own account also I can trivially move just one of them to another server if the need arises e.g. too much traffic to the forum.

Sub domains can look like tips.hosting.com or hosting.com/member/tips.html , where the later is a free hosting page.
hosting.com/members/tips.html is a page within the domain not a subdomain.
