Firebug (http://getfirebug.com/) is a valuable tool for webmasters. It is mainly a FireFox plugin, but there is a light version (http://getfirebug.com/lite.html) for other browsers.

I use FireFox 2 and today I upgraded to the last version of FireFox 2. According to Mozilla, this is the last planned upgrade of FireFox 2. The reason that I do not use FireFox 3 is that it is (was) not compatible with Firebug. So my simple

Question: Is the last version of FireFox 3 still not compatible with FireBug?

Firebug Releases (http://getfirebug.com/releases/index.html)

The firebug site says that the current release is compatible with both Firefox 3 and Firefox 2...

Thank you. I hope for additional confirmation before I upgrade.

Firebug 1.2.1 from the above link is working fine in FF 3.0.4 .

edit...

And now, FF 3.0.5 that just came through automatic update.

Yeah I've been using Firebug with Firefox 3 ever since it was released and it works fine. Couldn't live without it actually. Didn't know there was a light version for IE though. Thanks for pointing that out... :)

I have been using firebug with ff3 for quite a while. Don't even remember whether I lost it with the ff3 rollout!

Extremely bad programming (you should have got some warnings / options befor installation) from the Mozilla programmers. A new argument for Opera.
My favorites were reorganized during the installation and some may have been deleted.
FireBug seem to have disappeared, so I must reinstall it and see if it functions.Always when such things happen, I try to turn it into an advantage. Some times I will not miss the lost tools at all. I will not restore my system, since the world goes ahead. Fortunately my few Mozilla bookmarks are all saved at the Yahoo owned site kbleivik's Bookmarks on Delicious (http://delicious.com/kbleivik) from which I can export them back to that now IMHO opinion suspect browser.

I had to reinstall FireBug, but my favorites folder is reorganized during the installation:roll:. The biggest folder is renamed to "Toolbar for bookmarks" without any warning during the default installation. That is what we call "spaghetti programming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spagetti_code)".

Important question: How good are these programmers on security, my main argument for Opera, when they can not keep the favorites folder intact?

Sadly, I can't use Opera or Safari or IE. There's some problem with the wireless network we use. I have done everthing possible, but they can't seem to see the wireless network.

Chrome works, but it's well, Chrome... ;)

The only thing that worked was Firefox. But Firefox 3 is not as good as Firefox2.

If I put a youtube video on one of my blogger sites the video overhangs to the right. But only of FF3, not on Chrome on my computer. And Firefox3 is STILL not compatible with Realplayer.

I asked someone who is a big pusher of open source software about Firefox problems, who said: "You can't expect Firefox to be as good as IE. After all, it IS free!" Yeah. Very helpful...

Would Firebug help me with my Youtube problem?

Opera Support | Learn More about Opera (http://www.opera.com/support/)

There are too many bad programmers out there. I am sure that a lot of eCommerce sites loose money daily because their sites are not tested in different browsers.

Toady I tried Dell. The Opera browser hang when I should log into my account to get the commission code.

Happened two times.

I think it is security related. Is that a browser error or Dell's error?

Note:
Opera's overall security principle. Don't rely on any internet site.

Reduced browser security. Your credit card number was stolen via cross server scripting. Who would you blame?

I turn that to an advantage and buy later.

Additional question. Do you know about

opera:config

that you put in the browsers address field? That makes it possible for you to make your own private configuration. I think there are some network related options.

P.S. A wireless network is inherently insecure. A hacker can sit in your neighborhood with a fake similar network sending out stronger signals than your traditional. Your system can be hacked without you noting anything. So I would not recommend some browsers and networks if you worked for companies / institutions like The official website of the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) (http://www.sis.gov.uk/output/sis-home-welcome.html;)) or a company storing sensitive information behind that network.

But you know that.

Aside from me having to fix the folder structure by drag and drop manually, FF 3 + FireBug looks fine.

Based on over all security and functionality aspects it is my second browser choice in december 2008.

I may be biased since Opera is made in Norway. People from other countries may make more objective rankings.

My personal conclusion: Opera is a clear winner.

I would not trust a site / page that does not render well in Opera, especially if it is an ecommerce site or a site related to security issues.

Be extremely careful with unknown FF plugins and toolbars.

On any machine where I've tested all, FF 1.5 & 2.x run considerably faster than 3.x. And, FF 3.5 is a real memory hog.

Yesterday I upgraded to Firefox/3.5.2 and have no problems with either the browser nor the only plug in I use, FireBug.

It is a great browser for web masters. There seem to be a plug in for nearly everything:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:7

Example. In the search field, search for:

SEO
ticker

My general warning:

Be careful with third party extensions. You don't know what happens behind the scene. Shop on and log in to your bank account on another computer if you can.

After noticing a high occurence rate of stalled scripts, I disabled all add-ons/plug-ins, with a noticably great improvement in responsiveness of FF 3.5, although it's still a memory hog.

Which add-ons/plug-ins that functioned well in earlier versions of FF, but do not do so in 3.5, remains to be determined.

I've done pretty much the same thing, reducing my addons to only a few core addons, and I have seen performance increase drastically. However, I have also noticed that some AV software can slow the browser down as well.

I love FireFox, and have been using it since 2.0. But a couple of months ago, I started having problems after an automatic update, and ended up having to delete it and went back to 3.0.6, which I'm still using, with no problems.

I especially like the NoScript add-on, so that I have manual control over everything that runs, as I see this as one of the greatest security risks in an OS. But I do agree that it pays to be very cautious when downloading add-ons from who-knows-who.

As far as wireless systems, they can be just as secure as a hard-wired system, if properly configured.

Yes. I love fire fox for browsing. Currently I have using 3.5.2. Which is latest one.

Yup; that, or similar, is a common tale.

I try to keep installs for as many versions of browsers & anti-malware apps as possible, as one never knows which particular combination of software and hardware, might just prove to be problematic.

What kind of errors?

And, by "crash," do you mean that it "hangs," i.e. stops responding, or that it simply exits?

Firefox has a way of not responding every now and then, but I've never kept any record. Just chalk it up to memory burp and restart the browser. Sometimes I've been running a dozen programs and multiple instances of some. Can I blame Firefox if my system has become unstable?

It stands to reason that we are all going to be running multiple apps, some web based, some local that are going to tax the system when trying to compete for attention.

In defense of IE--which I rarely use--it never behaved like this. IE just keeps right on ticking while all around are falling like flies (in Windows) subjective opinion.

As above noted, it's oft times the add-ons/plugins that are the cause of poor performance.

Yep; and, here, adequate RAM is becoming increasingly critical.

I'd say that that's an objective opinion, as I see the same behavior across a wide range and number of platforms.

For that very reason I continue to use IE6 for a certain number of applications/web sites.

Firebug was just released for Google Chrome as well: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/bnbbfjbeaefgipfjpdabmpadaacmafkj?hl=en-us

Just be aware this is a prototype version.

I had to update my Firefox because it was not compatible with newer versions of firebug which are 1.5 and above.
