If you launched a new website with free domain and you are doing too much social bookmarking ang directory submission then google will consider it as spam.so if you take old domain so you can avoid this problem as the old domain has some visitors.
An older domain will get marginally higher rankings compared to an identical new domain and the keywords in the domain can help rankings along.

There are affects that can be felt from trying to use a new domain name verses and older domain name if you don’t know what you’re doing. A little understanding of what you’re trying to do can lessen the affect.
Let’s say that I decide today that I’m going to get into the dating industry. I buy a domain name and pay someone to set up and build me a dating site. Once the site is finished I realize that I have no money for marketing and need to figure out how to make money with the site quickly.
Step 1
I’d set up a blog and start posting 10 articles per day on the blog. Good well written articles that will be interesting to whoever might read the blog.
Step 2
I’d join twitter and start interacting with people that might be interested in this topic. If I’ve got 100 people following me then I’ll be letting those people know every time I make a blog post.
Step 3
I’d join some bookmarking sites and start bookmarking my articles as well as anyone else’s articles I found interesting.
Step 4
I’d join Squidoo set up some really good Squidoo pages and bookmark those pages as well as link them back to my main site.
Step 5
I’d setup some blogs on free blogging sites and write really good information and link those back to my main site as well.
Step 6
I’d submit the site to online SEO friendly directories.
Step 7
I’d bookmark my best articles and my free blogs.
Step 8
I’d bookmark my bookmarking sites.
What you’ve done is this.
1. You built some trust with Google by posting good well written articles daily.
2. You pinged Google and they started picking up the articles and ranking them in a couple hours.
3. You built up some links from other sites that are all on topic with yours and all on separate ip’s.
4. You go the sites linking to you some backlinks that’ll help boost the PR they are able to pass to you.
5. Since the free blogging sites have already aged and have built trust in the search engines you’re able to rank those sites for keywords you’re blog is not yet ready to rank for.
About the only way to get around the age filter is to build the site on an already aged subdomain name, get those pages to rank and do a permit redirect to the new site.
The above method is a realistic approach to ranking online because no matter how old the domain name you still have to build credibility, content and links to the site.

Taken from an 2008 interview with Matt Cutts:
Matt Cutts: In the majority of cases, it actually doesn't matter--we want to return the best information, not just the oldest information.

In the majority of cases.
When something like 98% of all websites online never make any money it’s easy to say in the majority of cases.
The majority of people never do anything with their sites. Therefore they should not have a problem. ;)
