Any chance that it's a bad idea (from an SEO perspective of course) to run 2 very related sites from the same server with the same IP address?

Lets say for example, I were to have an ecommerce site called, well..... toolbarn dot com... and also I have a site that shamelessly promotes my toobarn site.... discounttoolcoupons dot com. discounttoolcoupons dot com would have discount coupons and of course links to toolbarn dot com products.

With me so far? How likely is it that hosting both sites on the same server (with the same IP address) might do bad things to the sites' rankings?

Thanks!!

P.S. Love the podcast!

Should not be an issue as long as they both have different content. Just wondering why not offer the coupons on your main website?

I think he's trying to build a mini-net. I actually employ a relatively small mini-net, so I do utilize different servers. I do the cross-linking in what I term a 'circular pattern' no site links reciprocally, and each link is a minimum of ten websites away from the first, so I even went beyond the triangle pattern.

In this case here you only have two sites, so I don't think its going to be a problem, but it should more than just a mirror with a different domain name.

Personally, I would keep them on separate servers.

I only put my sites on dedicated IPs.

As what has already been mentioned - it won't be an issue as it has different content.

My opinion, I'd just focus on one site - have all the good content in it. It's easier to do SEO on one site than to worry about another one.
