Let's say I write an article about fashion, on the bottom I put a finance website, will that be worth less as a link if it's not related?
Or the article I write must be related to my website?
I don't know about placing links on articles that is not relevant, it seems inappropriate. I suggest you just place links or create articles that are related to your site. If you think a certain link can aid or support the article, then by all means place it.

I don't think it will have a negative impact because you will not get penalised for this. You will still get the benefit of any back links if the article is distributed to other sites. However you will not reap the full benefits as compared to if the content was related to the overall website content.

I agree however there are some sites that are just hard to write about and it is easer to write about something we are interested in a link it to the uninteresting site.
You want get the full benefits but you will benefit.
