Hi everyone

I need to get some advice on hosting - would you recommend a VPS over shared hosting, in terms of reliability and performance?

many thanks in advance

Either or will work if you are just getting started.

VPS hosting allows you to use more server resources so it's better for busy sites, but it is more expensive than shared hosting.
If you're just starting out shared hosting will be fine, but you should go with a company who provides an upgrade path to VPS.

Most of these hosts will offer shared hosting and upgrade to VPS:

Thanks for your replies guys. Just to give you some background, the sites have been running since July 2007, so although still relatively young, we're not just staring out. Currently the sites are hosted on VPS, with a company called webfusion. Our year's hosting is coming to an end and due to the fact that we have been getting TERRIBLE time-outs recently (at least once twice a day-arrgghh), i think we should move. I am a not sure whether the fault lies in VPS as a hosting platform or with the actual host company who have poor software (or whatever the case may be)...as the research i have done re VPS seems to suggest it should give you better reliability and performance. So i can't seem to decide to continue with VPS or ditch it altogether?

Many thanks!
