1)Take advantage of online forums and online communities.
The great thing about forums and online communities is that you can target a certain group that fits the certain demographic that you are looking for. You can discuss about lots of things about the niche that you represent or offer.
2)Make use of newsletters.
Provide people with a catalog of your products and interesting and entertaining articles. If you make it really interesting and entertaining, more people will sign up for your newsletter and recommend it to other people. The more people who signs up for your newsletter, the more people there will be that will go to your site increasing your traffic.
3)Trade links with other sites.
You don’t have to spend a cent. All you have to do is reach an agreement with another webmaster. With exchanging links, the efforts both sites do will benefit both sites. Every traffic that goes to the site could potentially click on the link of your site and visit your site as well. This works well especially when both sites feature the same niche.
4)Write good content for your site.
Many search engines track down the keywords and keyword phrases your site uses and how they are used. It is not a requirement that a content should be done by a professional content writer. You could do your on but you have to make content for your site that is entertaining as well as informational. It should provide certain requirements as well as great quality. Generally, internet users use search engines to find what they are looking for.

Yes forum can deliver significant traffic. If you post in the right forums that are directly related to your line of business then it certainly can. The advantage is two fold; firstly you get backlinks and secondly you are discussing with others in a related field so you can win customers. If the posting is genuine and adds value you will see that that you will have significant referral clicks form the post itself.

I truly agree with that. Especially if the forum sites you are participating on are closely related to what your site is all about.

This month our site had a bit more than 8000 unique visitors. From WebProWorld here we only had 35 unique visitors. If that is what you mean traffic generator, I am impressed.

The problem is when you vote and go back to that page, the stars are blank. I asked the creator (AKA the one who helped me.) and got this respone:
To display a number of stars you need to query the database to get the current rating and then in the page include a switch statement:
switch(currentRating)
{
case 0: // don't do anything
case 1: // set the 1st div's background to filled star
...
case 5:// set all 5 stars to filled star
}

Nice post francis84. Also you could add there "submit your site to free directories". ;)
That probably won't do much. I always hire out for that sort of thing, and focus my directory time on:
1) niche directories
2) quality, paid directories (yahoo dir, botw, etc)
3) ehh dmoz.org

If I submit my links to paid directories do I guarantee a good result for the site?

One thing I do is when I get an email from a friend that I want to forward on to other friends I put my sig on the bottom of it that has my website links in it. Hopefully that will encourage my friends to visit my sites now and then too to see what I've updated on them.
I also write my forum website address at the bottom of my return address on all my snail mail.
I have one forum for all my websites ( and my friend's web sites ) rather then a separate forum for each site, no one ever joins or posts but me but I get a lot of traffic to it, but they don't seem to click on my ads. I'm not really sure what they do there... People don't seem to join multi-topic forums, but I do get a question now and then from someone who visited one of my sites then that gives me new ideas for content by finding the answer to their questions.

You can do manual submissions to directories for free (that's very cheap)... but of course, keep in mind that not all for free are beneficial... But if you're looking for a cheap way, that would help. ;)

What about an online poker forum? I don't really have a lot of money to promote my poker forum. I know
there is a lot of competition out there for online gambling forums. I hoping to find some cheaper ways to promote
it?

Hi,
What about the Classified Ads?
These are also a free traffic generation source. Only you have to pitch in the right direction describing your specialty, and you get a new visit. There are tens of Classified sites that can send you hundreds of visits daily.
Social Media also are a good traffic producers. Only your story has to be interesting and attractive title is a must.

Driving traffic that is not targeted is usually a waste of time and effort.
I will take my target audience any day every day and twice on Tuesday and I'll take it organically and pay for it too!!!
The OPs post is good advice- however old and outdated it may be.....

Well, I drive about 3,000,000 FREE hits every month to my website. I know ALL the great places to get free traffic. But, gambling portals and adult sites can NOT be promoted this way. I can show you the best places, but are we allowed to post links here?

the cheapest way to get traffic is, get a good position in google. If you're site has a good position in google you'll definitely get good traffics. Its cheap, unless you don't pay to have link.
JimmyT
09-18-2008, 02:41 AM
Yeah, but how do you get good search engine ranks at google (or any search engine) if you don't have traffic in the first place?
I mean, I know how I do it, but how does everyone else do it?

Traffic and good search engine ranks is different. Traffic is based on the hits or visitors of your site
which came from the "link building technique" that you have done and we must select site that has a good traffic.
To get a good search engine ranks you must do the "on-page optimization" that include content optimization, the title-tag, several META-Tags, headlines & text decoration, alt- and title-attributes and continuous actualization.

Well, that's basically what I do....
I make sure a site is tweeked as well as I can get it, as far as SEO goes.
Then, the day I launch it I smother it with free traffic. Normally, in the first week, I'll have about 1,000,000 hits. By that point, I see the search engines crawling my page, having been informed by their toolbar users that my site exists.
I have some sites that are membership based sites, and I can usually, from that free traffic, get
about 1000 members the first week online.
Members start linking to my pages from their sites, and I end up with a lot of cross links through no effort of my own.
By week 2, my Alexa rank is typically broken into the 500,000 range somewhere.
Soon after that, the organic search engine results start to trickle in. Like one site of mine, after 1 year online, it has an alexa rank of 60,000ish and gets about 3,000 GOOD organic hits from search engines per month, and another 3,000 not so good organic hits from search engines. But I don't care, I WILL take any hits I can get because it all seems to help in the long run.
But, after talking to a few "seo experts", I've found out that most of them do not do this like I do. And I just don't get why.
If you do a search for the keyword "seo", do any of the sites that come up have lousy Alexa ranks???
hmmm. Most people just don't seem to consider that, and I don't understand that either.

Then I try and do some article marketing, not easy but free
Social bookmarking and forums for backlinks
Seems to work:)
JimmyT
10-01-2008, 03:09 AM
Cool, that's something to try. But, what if you can't/don't want to sit around for a few months, twiddling your thumbs till the traffic starts to trickle in? What if you want/need to get a million hits in a month or two? Then what?
The benefits of traffic are so overwhelming. I mean, it saves you from having to submit to search engines (because their tool bar members basically submit your pages for you) and the more popular a site is, the more you can compete in the search engines for popular key words/key phrases.

I do agree with all said above, yes forums are the best way to get maximum of back links, these help lot to rank a page in a good position, along with that if you have a directory submission, and social bookmarking, then there are chances of getting better rank position in less period.

Whenever I see my google analytics I don't see much traffic or say no traffic is coming out of forums. But if it is do follow forum definitely there can be a back links. With link exchanges, some how I always does not go with reciprocal. Going reciprocal works if we can place link on higher PR site and why somebody with high PR wants to put his link on low PR page?

The term Cheap Way says it all.
I think the Internet is dominated by publishers with a lot of cash.
This makes if difficult to make progress as you need cash to grow, but you can't get cash until you have website visitors, which cost cash.
Catch 22.
