A site map becomes more and more important as your site/blog gets bigger and bigger. Very small sites don't need one but as a site gets more in-depth a site map acts as a street map for the search engine spiders making all those deep pages a lot easier to find.

Sitemap is important for blog or website. Sitemap is like index, for example when we read the book first we see index to know about chapters. In the same manner is sitemap serves like a index for visitors as well as for search engines
In wordpress if you integrate google sitemap plugin you generate sitemap with one click and as well as you can ping your blog in major blog search engines

Sitemap is use in a blog ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE TONS OF BLOG ENTRIES. This is done for two good reasons: 1) so that your old posts wouldnt be buried down; 2)SE Spider can crawl your HUGE blog easily.

I agree. Small blogs do not necessarily need a sitemap. Wordpress blogs doa good job of being indexed by Google nevertheless as for some reason it is more search engine friendly that other blog software around. For larger blogs stemap is important not only for search engine spiders but also for users. You will be surprised how many users actually look at sitemaps to find useful information on a website.

Agreed, sitemap offers the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site

I think a sitemap is imperative. And define it in your Webmaster Tools account: Google Webmaster Central (http://www.google.com/webmasters/#utm_medium=et&utm_source=us-en-et-bizsol-0-finderB-all&utm_campaign=en)

Oh I see... thank you very much. I'm not so sure about my idea regarding the importance of a site map in a website before. But now, atleast I've confirmed that my idea is somehow correct. ;)

Your site would have to be of substantial size before it is necessary to have a site map. I am hoping that I will need to use one for my blog--I am adding to it daily and have been blogging for a month now, but it is no where near the size yet for needing a map.

its better to place a site map for users, so that they can find what they need and also for bots to crawl your site better. Make sure to broken links.

It's always better to have a sitemap on the blog if it is a big blog or a small one which is still days' old. The sitemap would guide the Search Engines' spiders and make sure they follow each and every post on your site.

Use XENU which is free tool you can download from download dot com.
It gives you broken links report as well as sitemap also. Its a free tool and no restriction for number of pages

Does anyone know if the unlimited sitemap on Create your Google Sitemap Online - XML Sitemaps Generator (http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/) is limited to one domain or, when you buy it, you can use it on as many websites as you like?

Building sitemap is very essential for any site or blog. It informs the search engines about your website. Note that the sitemap is acknowledged by all the BIG 3 Search Engines.

Hang on a minute guys.
I have a few blogger blogs and for the life of me I do not know if it's possible to create a sitemap for blogger blogs. [Must find out] But my point is I get a fair amount of traffic to those blogs without a site map
Posts get indexed quickly, often within a couple of hours and I get good SERP position for a large number of my posts.
Agreed that sitemaps are incredibly valuable for websites but I truly wonder how much so for blogs especially blogger blogs.

Yes, a sitemap is important...I've only heard one top SEO guy say that it wasn't necessary for blogs.

Actually you don't need a site map if your site is built spider friendly, but the real issue comes when the site gets bigger & bigger and having a site map becomes a must to welcome the spiders crawl your pages... And, the same story goes for blogs too. If it is bigger, then have a site map.
