Hi,
As everyone on this forum seems to know the answers, I thought I would ask another question!!!
Can anyone see why this page: The Green Man from HandcraftedUK (http://www.handcrafteduk.com/ethnicgiftsthegreenman-c-3_47.html) does not rank well for the term 'the green man'?
It's currently on page 14 on a Google UK search. I know that I need to work on getting more backlinks for the page but, even so, page 14 is fairly low. Most of my other keywords fall within the first 3-4 pages on Google.
Do you think that each product having 'green man' in the title could be seen as spam?
Thanks again,
Gary

I would say you need a few more links to that page with the anchor text "the green man" (either internal or external).
An allinanchor search for "the green man" shows you quite far down the list allinanchor:"the green man" - Google Search (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=allinanchor%3A%22the+green+man%22&btnG=Google+Search&meta=)
Also, take the line break <br /> out of your link on the home page, which is currently <a href="http://www.handcrafteduk.com/ethnicgiftsthegreenman-c-3_47.html">The Green Man<br /></a>
This should help.

At first thought I would say that the term itself is comprised of three very generic words that would draw a VERY random sort of results.

I would add "green man", "green" and "man" in your keywords as well. Probably "men" and "greenman" one word too. It should help.
I agree the problem is mainly that the term is generic as is. Heck, #4 in the search results for the term doesn't even have keywords or descriptions at all.
No SE seems to have it in their definitions as a key phrase. ie when Google et al sees "Burning Man" they don't return a bunch of links about house fires.
I would try suggesting to it Google. Worst they will do is ignore you. Best they standardize the phrase and make it easier to tune for it.

Because just about the only links to that page are from your own site.

You also have to realize that the phrase has more competition than e.g. "auto loans".

How long have you been trying to rank for this term?
competition is 36 million - thats pretty steep
your definitely going to need more links, unless you want to pay for it.

First thing you can do is go to Google and sign up for Google Alerts using keywords that relate to your product (e.g. Pagan culture, Pagan culture articles, Celtic mythology blogs, Celtic blogs etc). Every time you get an alert from G head to the page and leave a comment with a "the green man" link in your signature. This should help you build up relevant links and you'll rock up the rankings in no time!
The other thing you can do is add more content. I dont have a clue who or what "the green man" is and would probably head to wikipedia to find out. Add some more relevant articles and build yourself some good internal links.

I think that you have to add link on that page all related to the common topic "green man" and make sure that in google the content of that page is closely to the topic for the search term people are looking for.you can also check the back-link

Actually only 2 million for "green man". There is just so much chaff in there it is treating it as two unrelated terms instead of one.
