I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on hostgator?
tech support?
dedicated server comments.
are they easy to get in touch with if you have questions or issues, etc.
thanks for any input.

Hi Tony, their support is quite good in my experiences and their dedicated servers are very well priced.
They also have a coupon deal at the moment: Web Hosting Diary: New Hostgator coupon code (http://www.hostingdiary.com/2007/11/new-hostgator-c.html)

Is that your site, Mr. Coupon Guy?
Not exactly a ringing endorsement, if you're profiting from providing positive feedback

Tony_V: Hostgator, like many others are Budget Hosts. In other words, you get what you pay for.

Do you know what's involved in running a dedicated server? It's nothing like shared hosting.
Dedicated servers are generally provisioned as is. No security hardening, no optimizing, etc.
You'll need to know what you're doing or hire someone. Or suffer a potential security breach.

As for support, why not shoot them an email and see for yourself?

I have been a Host Gator customer for almost 3 years now and am more or less content.

I am content because they are moderately priced, offer unlimited domains, Fantastico, and have relatively good backbone connectivity (The Planet in Texas) with good monthly bandwidth.

But the 'moderately priced' comes with some drawbacks - sometimes they don't only eat their competition but their customers as well: I have experienced about 3 server crashes with downtimes of more than a day each, they love to update servers and then things just stop working in your applications, e.g. the complete character set of a blog in an Asian language was just screwed, Chron Jobs stopped, databases were locked...and this is where support comes in: If you do have a problem you will need to be insisting, the first answer is almost always somewaht standard without really looking into the issue. But hey, I am having fun with the Gators....and seen much worse in this pricerange. After all their customer base is substantial and growing.

Hope this helps.

look up "overselling"

see what it is, and see its pros and drawbacks to customers...then decide for yourself. Hostgator is one of the top oversellers in the industry

Most web hosts do oversell on shared plans these days and this is not a problem in itself, it's how they manage it that counts.
