Buying domain name, redirecting and maintaining IBL benefit

My question is:

If I buy a domain name and then redirect it to my main domain name, will I preserve the benefit of any IBLs that may be pointing to the redirected domain name and pass that onto the main domain?

If so, what type of redirect do I need to use?

I have found that the answer is no. Sure the bookmark and type in traffic should stay, but Google "resets" domains when ownership changes.

However I have registered expired domains in the past which have maintained pagerank (although I think they might have lost it and then, after a while it has come back (according to TB)

Does this mean that Google doesn't reset PR with expired domains but only when ownership is switched such as when a domain is bought?

Or, is there a 'sandbox' period where PR is wiped but if links are still incoming 12 months later fror eg, Google assumes that the site must have relevant content and therefore deserves the IBL benefit?

I feel there is. Like I said above the domains starts over when ownership has changed from my testing.

OK well that would suggest it is worth it if:

a) it's viewed as a long term project
b) the subject of expired/bought domain is a close match to that of the new domain so that IBLs are relevant and don't get removed by the webmaster or discounted by Google.

So, in this case, what type of redirect would one use?

You can buy all the expired domains you want and 301 redirect them to your main domain.
