Hi,
How many keywords can I put in the keywords tag? Do you suggest to set an upper limit for number of keywords, or it just does not matter?
One more thing:
search engine, search engine optimization
Will it be considered as two different keywords/keyphrase OR, SE will count 'search engine' keyword to be appearing twice there?
Thanks in advance.

3 more questions:
Can SEs differentiate between cases? I have never seen them returning different result for my query and My Query. Hence I think I should not make separate entries for my keywords and My Keywords, right?
There are many images in the navigation bar, like bullets, arrows etc. What kind of alt tag should I add to these images or I should left it blank? If I start adding my keywords as alt tag to these bullets and arrows, is there any chance to be charged for spamming? Other images on my site contains proper alt tag though.
If I use keyword rich filenames for images, will it add to keyword density of my site?

General practice is to put keywords other than proper nouns in lowercase. As far as the "layout" images, the alt tag should simply be alt="". This is where the idea of user first comes in, how would it be to the blind user hearing all those alt tags full of keywords read off?

Any suggestions about number of keywords in the meta keyword tag?
And if I put keywords = "search engine, search engine optimization", will it be counted as 2 separate keywords or SE will consider 'search engine' keyword to be appearing twice?

None of the major search engines pay much attention keyword meta tags anymore. They are of very little value. I don't use them on my own sites.

I put 8 to 10 keywords, not repeating a keywords more than 3 times. It is true that major search engines do not care about however it can still serve to some others and for me it is a good reminder when dealing with social bookmarks websites

Hi,

There's no definitive limit, but don't spam your tags - you'll be doing more harm than good. Do some keyword research and order your keywords by search volume. Find a prominent cut-off point and work from there upwards.
search engine, search engine optimization
Will it be considered as two different keywords/keyphrase OR, SE will count 'search engine' keyword to be appearing twice there?
If they're separated by a comma, they'll be counted separately. Of course, if your website contains information on 'search engine optimization', this will boost the relevancy for 'search engine' too, as it contains the secondary keyword.
Can SEs differentiate between cases? I have never seen them returning different result for my query and My Query. Hence I think I should not make separate entries for my keywords and My Keywords, right?
Absolutely. Not only can they differentiate between cases, but they can differentiate between singular and plural, and are looking more closely at synonyms. Read up on Latent Semantic Indexing for more information on this.

You should use alt tags for all images, but there's a possibility that doing so for small images could be seen as spam. Whatever you do, don't give them all the same alt tag!
If I use keyword rich filenames for images, will it add to keyword density of my site?
Not to any noticeable degree. It all pales into insignificance when compared to on-page text. If you're starting a new website, by all means use keywords where relevant in filenames, but don't go changing filenames of existing pages/images on an established site (unless your images are named xxx-viagra-enlargement-pills-casino-insurance.jpg :D)
Hope this helps.

myself, 9-15 keywords, but as mentioned, they're not so important anymore.
Make sure your keywords are placed on your index page, ideally bold or between <h1> tags etc

Your Keywords in the Keywords tag should not 10 - 12.

Thanks for all the suggestions. So if keyword tag is about to lost its relevancy then what is the most important on page factor I should concentrate on? And how SE's are going to understand the theme of the page? Are they counting the content of the page only?

Thanks for the link incredible. I was just wondering what are the factors that affect ranking most? I read this thread:
http://www.webproworld.com/search-engine-optimization-forum/60293-best-page-search-engine-optimization-factors.html
The list seems impressive, but from the other comments it looks that no on-page factors affect ranking much. Then what is the factor that influence the ranking? Only links? Or, Content? Or, Online Presence!

Allow me to correct something. The empty alt attribute should look like this: alt=" ".

Try to keep you keywords no more than 8. Better practice are 4.
search engine, search engine optimization
Will it be considered as two different keywords/keyphrase OR, SE will count 'search engine' keyword to be appearing twice there?.
It will count search engine appearing once.
What you mention here is a common non-sense practice of SEO scummers.
To be honest I did not read the thread yet. If someone already said what I said now, I apologize. :)

Can SEs differentiate between cases?
Maybe they can, but they don't.
There are many images in the navigation bar, like bullets, arrows etc. What kind of alt tag should I add to these images or I should left it blank?
You should leave them black like this: alt=" ".
If I start adding my keywords as alt tag to these bullets and arrows, is there any chance to be charged for spamming? Other images on my site contains proper alt tag though.
First, stuffing your alt attributes with keywords could trigger SE filters. And second is a meaningless practice and annoying for blind users using screenreaders.
Just a tip. When you optimize a site, you will have the best experience and success with search engines and potential customers, if you optimize your sites with users in mind.
Every professional SEO will say to this AMEN.
If I use keyword rich filenames for images, will it add to keyword density of my site?
I guess you must understand that the keyword density theory have helped a lot of site owners to get penalized from search engines. Write content for your visitors, and the Search Engines will understand what your site is about.
Last tip. Read my post about the use of the alt attributes:

If you agree with the idea, can you clarify what can you achieve using a keyword more than once in the keywords meta tag? Semantically it does not make any sense at all. So what else? Just to have more redundant bytes on your page, and push the page content further down?

Do you do it for any SEO reasons or it for something else?
1. You know that I am very concerned that everyone on this planet must be able to access the information I place on the web. People with and without disabilities, etc. Accessibility?
2. I am also concerned that every search engine or other search application can index and rank my sites properly. I do not do SEO only for the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask. I try to satisfy all of them! Major and minor.

One small addition to this John...
URL's can be case sensitive. For example, in .asp, upper case letters are often used by programmers to denote functions. The SE's, Google in particular, will index both the URL with the upper case letters and the lower case letters separately, as different URL's.
I know this doesn't apply to meta keywords but a point worth mentioning anyhow.
As far as the meta keywords are concerned, don't stress about it. Make them applicable to the the page content. If you're targetting 8-10 keywords for a page, then use them. If you develope an on site search function proper keywords can come in handy.

Just to increase keyword density.we can put some keywords in keyword tag.I know that keyword density should be 4% to 7%.When a search engine looks a keyword more time, the value for that keyword increases.

What is your opinion about separating keywords with a "," a ";" or just a blank space.
which one should we use? and where?
Webnauts
08-23-2007, 05:49 AM
Using keywords in the keywords meta tags in hyphens (") is semantically incorrect. Using commas is ok, without them are OK also, and no white spaces are required anywhere. If you have keyphrases, then it is suggested to separate them form the other keywords with commas.

What? To increase the value of the keywords? Can you please be more specific? I mean can you tell how does that work? Because for my experience in Web Semantics this is a brand new issue for me.
Thanks.
