I just have a few questions about the anchor text in my backlinks

Is it better to change the anchor text so Google doesn't look at my site as spam? and how many back links should i have before i change it

how long should my anchor text be?

like currently i have it at

Travel Mugs | Logo Pens| custom koozies | coffee mugs | AWARDS

and

Promotional Pens| Custom Koozies | Key chains | Custom Travel Mugs @ Trueimprint.com!

or should i have a smaller anchor text with just 1 item or 2?

2 or 3 word combinations is good. Grouping a bunch of words (like in your signature) is not the best.

Think of it this way - what word or word combination would people use for a search for my product/service?

Well the easy answer is to simple match the anchor text to the content on the page.

...to match the content on the page ..... in a semantic kind of way.

Well... this is all relative to how many links you have too.

If you have 1000 links and 900 of them are the same text, that's probably not too cool. That kind of thing just doesn't happen (naturally).

On the other hand, if you have 10,000 links and 900 of them have the same text... that's probably not a big deal.

So there isn't really any hard and fast 'number'.

k that makes sense

but do search engines look at text around the anchor text? to see if it's different?

Yes, search engines do look at the text around the anchor text. Links look natural if given way naturally.

one can use variations when asking for links for eg: one can use company name, services and sometimes a combination of both.

Say: ABC is a website design firm.
OR
Website designing by ABC.com
