Taking Vampire Hunter as an example, my wife does question my sanity when I tease about the possibility of it being true. I don't actually believe it to be so. But, if I did push the limits, she would question my sanity (and maybe rightly so).
Lessons of truth can be learned from any writing and storytelling is quite an effective method as Jesus used parables quite often. He would often add a twist to a traditional story to turn his listeners on their head. For instance, in the parable of the prodigal son, the father gives up a portion of his land so that the son could have his portion of the inheritance early. Traditionally if a son had behaved that way to his father, at the least he would have been pitched off the property on his head. But Jesus had a different lesson in mind.

Nugent-Hopkins named as Calder Trophy candidate (http://oilers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=628765)
My vote is for him to win. He produced as much as the other two, in twenty some fewer games played, and for being just a kid, had a major influence on the ice and in the dressing room. He will be (already is) a game changer.

Then you owe it to yourself to! Look for folk, blues!, jazz and even serious classical arrangements. You'd be amazed what these instruments can be made to do. Experienced 'harp players' have an array of breathing techniques, such as circular breathing and rhythmic breathing so they can both draw out a note or phrase, or pump it to the beat. Try doing that on a harmonium!

What is the precise value of 9.999... ?
weegillis
05-08-2012, 01:46 PM
8071
There is no precise value, only a limit, which is never reached, only approached.
A precise value is limited to n digits, which if it is an evaluation, n must not be more than the least number of digits used in the calculation.
For example, 24 x 3600 could be rewritten as 2.4 x 10^1 * 3.600 x 10^3 = 2.4 * 3.600 * 10^4 = 8.640 * 10^4. To match the precision of the coefficients, this must be rounded down to 8.6 X 10^4.
The exception to the above would be if the result was being carried over to another calculation, in which case the value carried over would be 8.64 X 10^4, but the final result must still be reduced to two digits.
deepsand
05-08-2012, 06:04 PM

Actually, it's value is exactly 10.
1) X = 9.999...
2) 10X = 99.999...
3) Subtracting X from 10X = 9X = 90
4) X = 10
Any number with repeating digits is a rational number, the numerator and denominator of which can be determined by using the above technique.
Another example - 0.2857142857142857142857142857... .
Z = 0.2857142857142857142857142857...
1000000Z = 285714.2857142857142857142857142857
999999Z = 285714
GCD of 999999 and 285714 is 142857, so that it reduces to
7Z = 2
Z = 2/7

I shall however submit this number 8084 simply because I do understand the concept of number. I understand
WebProWorld Will locate it as minor navigation aid . . I have never owned or even possessed this number, I have merely re-located it out of the nothingness, I can not guarantee it is unused original or virginal.
This number has no inherent value. . . Any value it may acquire must be created inside some body's head or maybe by some computer software. It is quite possible for 8084 to assist in creating a level of value with some intellectual input.
I do fully appreciate that numbers are created by problem solvers as an aid to solving huge (or sometimes minor) problems. The concept creates a clarity when applied to specific tasks. I will however argue forever that numbers created to prove the correctness of other numbers is no more than an intellectual wank.

You're right about number, @Tubby. There is only one, and it started with us counting on our digits. Are you telling me that the sausage I just ate was not real.
Of no inherent value, which was a criteria set forth by you.
Then again, I remember a rock singer telling us once, "One is the loneliest number..."
1 has as companions an infinite number of sets of integers; e.g.:
N - Integers of any parity
2N - Integers of Even parity
2N-1 - Integers of Odd parity
Each of these sets is infinite in size, and of exactly the same size as the others.

weegillis was referring to a song lyric ( a poem) - the "one" refers to a single person (alone) many people find being on there own lonely.
The words "one is the loneliest number" In the song it proclamation that the singer does NOT have an infinite number of partners / companions / lovers.
I do believe that there is not an 'infinite' number of people.
I do believe that you know and understand this. I must conclude your post was mischievous.
P.S.

No, it can not be said to "be the case for each an every number"
a number has to be assigned a value - You yourself offered up some early electronic parts that had been assigned number. I recall one looked like a harmonica with a turbo charger. .
If that number had an inherent value (harmonica with a turbo charger) - every time a calculation using that number was executed, the results would be a Total balls up resulting in a ' harmonica with a turbo charger. ' embedded into the mathematical result. .
Numbers are a concept.

you just added in the eye of the beholder. that was not in the dictionary
That such does not appear in the definition that you quoted is immaterial to the fact that an observer is required, and that all observers will not equally perceive and value all that is observed.
No, it can not be said to "be the case for each an every number"
Given that I can to my satisfaction make it the case for every number, the claim is true.

The value of a number is, by definition, self-inherent.

Deep - anyone can place the words "To my satisfaction" to argue the authenticity of any Bullshit they care to spout
I shall not bother to respond if you are going to keep coming up with self satisfying qualifications.
Like "eye of beholder" and "to my satisfaction" . . . It is stupid.
It is comparable to arguing that Mount Everest is no more than a small bump on the ground. . . Yes. . A stupid blind man that is unable to visually see Mount Everest might argue it does not look big to him (eye of the beholder)
A stupid Blind man might never be satisfied with anything he chooses to be unsatisfied with.

" beauty is bought by judgement of the eye. " William Shakespeare
Meaning; different people have different ideas as to what is beautiful.
It does not mean that a 'Rose' is not a rose . . or that a roses inherent rose-ness can be changed into a daffodil by " the eye of the beholder" . .
Rarely do we find the words "in the eye of the holder" without the reference to 'Beauty'. The phrase records a rather nice observation about what an individual can perceive as beautiful.

It has something to do with related rates of the two hands, as in 'related speed'. Once every hour the two hands meet, but the time is not the same in minutes or seconds from the hour. You are bang on @mikmik in your clarification of 'per' and 'every'. 'Per' implies the same time each hour, whereas 'every' does not. Thanks for the hint.

Upon further reflection, the minute hand never overtakes the hour hand. Let's say it is 1:00 o'clock. The big hand is on the twelve, and the little hand is over the one. Now, the minute big hand travels to the 1, but the hour hand has moved while the minute hand was travelling, and is now beyond the 1. So the minute hand travels to where the hour hand is now, but when it gets there, the hour hand has moved and is further ahead. Then, the minute hand moves to the new position of the hr. hand, but again, it has itself moved further than when the minute hand gets to where it was. Then, the minute hand decides to move to the hr. hand's new position, but when it gets there, the hour hand has moved in the meantime and is no longer where the minute hand now is. Once again, the minute hand moves to where the hour hand now is but when it gets there, again, the hour hand is no where to be found!
This is known as a bad excuse for being late for work because, the boss, being unknowledgeable in advanced philosophy, still operates by common sense and asks why the minute hand didn't just aim a little further ahead every time like a normal clock, but he decided not to fire me if I bought a digital clock. I said sure, and that before you know it, I would be half way to the store.
But still, I think the answer is 1 hr. 5 and 5/12 minutes.

You've heard of the last survivor of the Jonestown flood? He spent his whole life retelling the story like he was bewitched by an albatross, and as there is apparently no sin in this he went to heaven when he died of very old age. St. Peter gave him one request upon entering the Pearly Gates to which he immediately blurted out, "I want to tell everyone in Heaven how I survived the Jonestown flood." Peter, being good to his word assembled all the masses, and being Heaven, everyone could hear perfectly well. He escorted our subject to the podium, and before departing asked, "Are you sure you want to do this?" To which was replied, "Well of course!" So, sadly, my Russian sunflower seeds are still in the package. it's been a disappointing spring for growing things, this year, at least down in the valley. I was so looking forward to having another crop, even if was just for the birds and bees. Last years plants were destroyed early in the fall, when they were just maturing, and after that we had three weeks of heat wave.
