THE SCOTSMAN
(Mike Cross)

Well, a Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair
And one could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share
He fumbled 'round until he could no longer keep his feet
And he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street
Ring-ding-diddle-liddle-I-de-o, ring-di-diddley-I-o
Oh, he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street

About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by
One says to the other with a twinkle in her eye
See yon sleeping Scotsman so strong and handsome built
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt...

They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be
Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
And there behold for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth...

They marveled for a moment then one said we must be gone
Let's leave a present for our friend before we move along
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow
Around the bonnie star the Scots kilt did lift and show...

Now the Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled towards the trees
Behind the bush he lift his kilt and gawks at what he sees
And in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes
Oh, lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize...

On a serious note, though, this is a disaster of unparalleled proportion. It's hard to imagine an entire town being wiped off the map in slightly more than the blink of an eye...

NYDailyNews.com: Minamisanriku has 9,500 residents missing from town after earthquake, tsunami ravages Japan (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/2011/03/12/2011-03-12_minamisanriku_has_9500_residents_missing_from_t own_after_earthquake_tsunami_rava.html)

And, yet, pales in comparison to some earlier ones. For instance:

While talking about Indonesia tsunami one date comes to mind which is 26th December, 2004. The Indonesian tsunami of 2004 was responsible of incredible amount of loss of life and property damage. Though many countries in the Indian Ocean like India, Thailand and Sri Lanka were affected the consequence of tsunami on Indonesia was incredibly high. As this country consists of number of islands the casualties were more. The reason behind this might be because the epicenter of the earthquake was on west coast of Sumatra. This earthquake and the tsunami which followed are also known as Sumatra- Andaman earthquake.

The main area of Indonesia which was affected by tsunami is Aceh. According to the statistics the death toll due to the tsunami was about 130,406 people and missing were 36,836 only in Indonesia. The number of people who had to be displaced due to this calamity is 504,518. The total economic damage of the tsunami of 2004 in Indonesia was about five billion US dollars. The tsunami was caused due to shifting of two tectonic plates under the sea namely Burma plate and India plate under the sea. Prior warning of the tsunami could not be issued which had resulted in much more damage. The only silver lining of this event was that the oil and gas sector was not damaged severely which is the main base of Indonesian economy. Assistance and help from all over the world both physical and financial was obtained by Indonesia. Still now Indonesia is recovering from the damages caused more than two years ago.

From 1923 Great Kantō earthquake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1923_Great_Kant%C5%8D_earthquake) :

This earthquake devastated Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama, surrounding prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka, and caused widespread damage throughout the Kantō region.[2] The power and intensity was astonishing: it managed to move the 93-ton Great Buddha statue at Kamakura which was over 60 km away from the epicenter, sliding it forward almost two feet.[3]

Casualty estimates range from about 100,000 to 142,000 deaths, the latter figure including approximately 40,000 who went missing and were presumed dead. Damages from this natural disaster were the greatest sustained by Prewar Japan. In 1960, the government of Japan declared September 1, the anniversary of the quake, as an annual "Disaster Prevention Day."

According to the Japanese construction company Kajima Kobori Research's report of September 2005, there were 105,000 confirmed deaths in the 1923 quake.

Disaster on top of disaster on top of disaster. In 1923 there were not 30 000 000 people in Tokyo, which will likely be in the plume of any radioactive cloud that escapes from the three damaged reactors. It hasn't happened yet, and hopefully they will get the reactors under control. Definitely, the toll of this disaster can not be determined, at this time. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

The primary effect would be the massive amounts of soot driven into the stratosphere from massive urban blazes. Assuming that it were the present nuclear arsenals involved, with most targets in the sub-tropics, the areas most affected would be North America and Eurasia; the Southern Hemisphere would be relatively unaffected.

Given that food production in the affected areas would plummet, there would be great pressure on many to migrate southward. Given sufficient mass migration, there would undoubtedly be an increase in the rates of both deforestation and industrialization below the equator.

Every old book on woodworking and carpentry that I have is chalk full of geometric illustrations. The ones that got it, went on to further their careers, those that didn't, were forced to learn by rote, mostly with framing square technique, string and nail techniques, etc. All practice, with little geometric understanding. As deepsand said, there is no predefined slope on a pyramid, or number of faces, either. I don't believe that a pyramid need even be regular, just faceted.

That's because different pyramids were built with different slopes.

By definition, a pyramid can have any slope greater than 0 degrees, and less than 90 degrees.

Even among the pyramids of one area, variations abound; for example, see The Pyramid Builder's Handbook: Ancient Egyptian Pyramids have Different Slopes (http://www.hitchins.net/ExpMyths.html#Slopes).

It is more of energy source or Qi force that is concentrated in the centre of the pyramid. Did a experiment many years ago with milk and bread inside and outside the pyramid. It turned out that the milk and bread didn't rot but the ones outside were rotten. So, I want to test again to see the Qi force if it is still the same after many years later. Unfortunately, my 6 feet pyramid made of plastic corroded. So thinking of using copper pipes to do it.

With all due respect, such claims have never stood up under carefully controlled conditions.

In this case, the environments inside and outside the pyramid were different. A covering of any shape would have yielded the same results.

I would have to agree. The only way to compare would be to keep all other conditions identical: temperature, air flow, etc. The same test could be performed with only a stick frame to ensure all other factors were identical.

Segue:

I don't know what unit of measure was used by the Egyptians, but given the history of Indian trade with East Africa, and the existence as long ago as 2600 BCE of an accurate system of measure, it may be assumed the Egyptians had a similar system, possibly even borrowed from the Indus Valley. The smallest unit was equivalent to 1/16 of an inch.

We do have a raft of references dating from the 19th century and later that 'calculate' the angle of each face at 51 degrees, 51 minutes. The ratios Phi and Pi both figure prominently in comparison of height, radius, circuit and apothem. Again, speculative, but it is possible to ascertain dimensions from these ratios and the available data, namely height.

Apparently the ancient Egyptians themselves.

From Ancient Egypt Online (http://www.ancientegyptonline.co.uk/giza.html)

... during the First Intermediate Period, the pyramid town of Khufu and the cemetery of Giza were both abandoned and left to decay. During the Middle Kingdom, the pyramids and tombs were plundered, and the causeways and temples were used as quarries by the pharaohs of the 12th Dynasty.

...

Since the demise of the ancient Egyptian civilisation, the site has been quarried to aid the construction of Cairo. Most of the limestone cladding of the pyramids ended up adorning the walls of the city.

We just had ours, and the blue berries won a majority on the support of only 25% of elligible voters (b/o 60% turnout at the polls). The strawberries got squashed down to a handful of seats, barely enough to form a party in the house, and lost their leader in the process. The oranges made history by finally becoming the official opposition, stealing Quebec away from everyone, especially the separatists.

So now we can finally put elections out of mind, for at least four years, and hope for the best in the upcoming future while we get on with life. I don't know about you Edhan, but personally, I deplore elections, especially all the bull that's ferried to and fro in full view of the electorate leading up to the vote. The whole country is breathing a sigh of relief, right now, we can be sure of that.

I deplore them because the electorate invariably simply and fallaciously assume that the scoundrels not presently holding office cannot be any worse than those presently seated; and, later, wonder how it is that we're even worse off.

It will probably take the UK at least 2 more elections to forget the sins of the previous scoundrels to hold office.

Our new Republican Governor here in Pennsylvania, who refuses to allow producers of natural gas from the Marcellus shale to be taxed, is seeking to drastically reduce funding for public schools and universities, suggesting, with a straight face, that they simply frack for gas on their campuses as a means of making up the shortfall.

That's but one example of the actions of the new would be Robber Barrons that the electorate here in the US handed us in last November's mid-term elections.

A Female friend of a man said " your house is a mess, your toilet is disgusting. . .Bla Bla Bla!. .
The man duly disappeared for a few minutes and returned saying " I just rang Helen, (Mutual friend) She said she will come around tomorrow for a few hours and give the place a clean up".
Whereupon the the female friend said " Oh my god! and headed to the toilet to 'pre clean it'.

OK. . . a pre clean might not be perfect, but it is good enough to allow visitors.

Not untill I had eaten the raw egg on dry bread . . . Listening to encouraging words like . "you better eat it all He got up early specially so you could have 'breakfast in bed' . . . He tried so hard!

Mothers should never ban their kids from using the jug, toaster and fry pan . . It only takes a couple of minor burns and the kids are trained and ready for the 'Breakfast in bed' for Dad. . .

At the time, Dave and I were engaged in an exchange of PMs. Suddenly, metaphorically speaking, the line went dead; not even a dial tone. As this was quite out of character for him, I allowed that there must be a good reason for the abrupt silence. Never thought that the good reason would be so bad.

That, in case you've not seen the relevant threads, is how this Breakroom came to be branded with the "Castle" name.

Well, if you're going to commit that much aviation fuel for the getting here, might be more effective to use it to saturate my land. That should obviate the need for mowing for quit some time.
