I was lucky to climb Mount Merapi as happened to be in the area on the Indonesian New Years Eve. So we climbed through the night (with a local guide) and were at the summit to watch the sunrise on New Years day. It is probably the most adventurous thing I have ever done and so memorable as I am sure that I could see the curve of the earth from up there. I am going to look thorugh my photo album and see if I have any photo of it...I must have taken a photo and if I find it I will post it.

So is your volcanic rock necklace available on your website and do you know which volcano the rock is from? Have any from Merapi?

That's what happens when one relies solely on Wikipedia.

Terrasphere has multiple usages :

A tellurion; or,
The solid portion of a planet that is above water;
A simulator of Earth-like conditions.

No. 2 is today most often used by companies that specialize in environmental engineering.

Bathysphere is also used as an alternative for aquasphere - a word also not currently found in dictionaries - but generally referring to deep waters, such as oceans, whereas aquasphere includes both the shallow and the deep.

There are quite a number of words found in Science Fiction that have not yet made their way into formal dictionaries.

According to Black and his co-researchers, ginger's pain reducing effects are biologically plausible with both in vitro and in vivo animal studies showing an effect of gingerols, shogaols, and zingerones on inflammatory compounds. "[This suggests] ginger may have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties akin to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs," stated the researchers. link to reference (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/reeds-inc-cites-new-benefits-of-ginger-in-pain-relief-2010-06-10?reflink=MW_news_stmp)

NSAIDS for pain relief have some side effects, such as stomach ulcers, so I dont like to take them. Paracetamol and aspirin are not so harsh on the stomach, but are not anti inflammatory like nsaids, and so arent quite as effective for certain types of pain caused by inflammation, like muscle aches etc.

I don't like them, since singing will vanish if they spread all over the world. Don't misunderstand, it is facinating to see how another culture do it in their games. Fantastic arrangement so long. And the colours and the quality of the Tv pictures. Really facinating. The vuvuzelas are already spreading to Norway.

Ok8-) may be more neutral than singing that may be regarded as nationalistic:wink:.

Personally I liked The Slovenia / England match with "normal sounds" from the arena. Englishmen singing, and they can sing. The vuvuzelas that we here unofficially characterize as "summing bees" were quite silent in that match.

The reason I have always regarded it as boring is because it is so difficult to see the hockey puck. Too fast for a slow Norwegian.

And soccer is Global. Hockey and American football especially, more local.

Formic and Oxalic acid, respectively.

It is the latter that gives rhubarb its tart astringent taste . While the concentration of such in its leaves makes them quite toxic, the stalks, particularly when cooked, are generally not so. Rhubarb has also been part of traditional medicine for quite some time, particularly as a laxative.

And, yes, organic chemistry is most fascinating.
How many acids (and tastes) are unknown to us or not yet invented by mutation? How many are still hidden deep in the rain forests or in the Ocean? Like there is an infinite number of combinations of 0,1 there is an infinite number of combinations of C, H and O.

Of course I played football as a boy. England is not across the sea from where I am. Football was invented in England.

Oregano: Oregano -again antibacterial properties, the taste compliments basil, so nice with tomato sauce again.

Timian: Thyme - strong aroma that is said to impart courage and vigor and cure melancholy. A pick me up and nice with cheese also.

Sitronmelisse: Lemon Balm - Has sedative properties...long used to treat insomnia. Also has anti viral properties and works as an insect repellent. Nice with salad, potatoes and even in butter.

The Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), whose members were invariably referred to as Waafs (pronounced /ˈwæfs/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_English)), was the female auxiliary of the Royal Air Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Air_Force) during World War II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II), established in 1939. I havent really suffered in the heat in UK this year, it is v.hot here at the moment, but nowhere near the temps where you are. I keep the bath full of cold water and take a dip to cool off whenever necessary. Obviously I would rather a pool, but for now its just a tub, plus for sleeping, when your body temp drops it signals your brain to produce melatonin to put you to sleep, so I think it helps me sleep in the heat too, but like i say, much less hot here.

Yep showers dont cut it, it has to be the tub, and you have to submerse for some time, at most 20C . A shower only cools your skin for a bit, submerse in cold water for some time till you are cold right through...if you can take the initial shock to the system...and stay put for sometime till your core temp has dropped.

Or  u could get AC

A smart blonde.

A blonde went into a bank in London and asked for a small loan by using her Rolls as morgage. Ok, replied the bankier and drove the Rolls into the garage. Three weeks later the blonde returned, paid back the loan and should walk to the garage to get her Rolls.

In the mean time, the bankier had rated the bonde's creditwothiness and found that she was good for millions of pounds. Why did you ask for such a small loan aksed the bankier.

It is so expensive to park the car in London she replied and left.

They put their money in Icelandic banks to get a higher than normal interest rate. The Icelandic banking system grew 10 times the value of their national income, so everybody with a sound economic sense felt that something was wrong. Suddenly Icelandic banks popped up in Norway. As far as I know Vikings never left Europe, they kind of integrated due to cultural influences, that assimilation duly influenced Scandinavian rulers military ambitions to focus on the Baltic regions, alongside Western Europeans in the Crusades.

Regarding getting change from a penny for my thoughts, its worse than that...usually people expect a full refund or replacement, claiming not fit for purpose under the sale of goods act 1979.

Didn't they try to settle in America, but fail because of too many hostile Indians?

While Norse settlements in Vinland (Greenland and Eastern Canada/Northeastern US) are well documented, and evidence of presence has been claimed to have been found to the extreme western extent of the Great Lakes, I find no mention of hostilities with Amerinds being cause for their withdrawal.

Climatic change or not - or because they returned back to where they came from. Norwegian saying. ("Borte bra men hjemme best" - Away from home is good but home is better.

Even today Russians / Ukrainians talk about Swedish vikings. They don't forget them. Russians have an excellent memory, and when NATO left Keflavik, Russia stepped in and said they would defend Iceland ( against whome? ).

Both Viking sagas and Mi'kmaq oral history describe the encounters...

It is said that the Vikings arrived in America almost 500 years before Columbus did. Leif Ericsson ventured SW from Greenland, to islands of N.Canada and then to the shores of NewFoundland, where it is said that they found the land so inviting that they stayed through the winter before returning to Greenland without any conflict.

Leifs brother Thorvald who at a later date returned to Leifs camp, is said in the sagas to have attacked 9 locals who were sleeping under canoes at the time. One escaped and returned with a force, and killed Thorvald, brief hostilities were said to follow, but still the rest remained there the winter.

Later another of Lief's brothers Thorstein went there to retrieve his dead brothers body, but just stayed the summer.

When in 1009 Thorfinn Karlsefni went, possibly with a view to settling there, relations between his party and the indigenous people show signs in records as having been peaceful, with tales of bartering between them.

Records of settlements that sprung up after that suggest they were short lived and mainly had the purpose of taking resources such as wood that was in short supply in Greenland. There is some speculation as to whether their short stays were due to hostile relations with locals, or due to them only staying as long as required to collect the resources they wanted.

That is our state religion and to be part of the Govenrment I think a majority have to adhere to Lutheranism according to our constitution. That is as far as I know more theory than practice. (And if you are part of the Government, that is the King's board, you can be brought to court by not expressing your meaning - that is being silent. By not expressing your meaning, you can become responsible for a wrong decision or action).

I think Norway is a much more secular state than the USA. Religion is not very important and the party that has the christian name, Kristelig folkeparti, swing above and below a socalled line to be represented in our next parliament.

Once I succeeded in getting the Mods. attention, and he'd the time to more thoroughly investigate, my suspension was lifted.

haha, funny analogy, but I think that what happened with the Vikings over that 200 year period between being in Europe and going to America, was more an integration of cultures, rather than one taking over the other. For example in England to this day most people have Xmas trees, that was an old Viking tradition adopted by Europeans, the Vikings used to decorate evergreen trees at the winter solstice. There were influences on both sides and neither culture was totally "reprogrammed" by the other so to speak, they both just adopted some of the others ways into their own cultures. There was a climate change around that time, a mini ice age, that meant that viking ships could no longer easily reach European shores, so they headed towards the Americas due to warmer climes.

The link points to a different Battle of Copenhagen, a battle at sea. Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, the greatest sailor in the history of the world, defeated the stronger Danish fleet.

In the siege of Copenhagen, the British army used artillery to bombard the city, knowing that civilian casualties would be likely to ensue. This was standard practice for a besieging army, but the Danes thought that the British would be too civilised to do it to them. Sadly they were wrong, because the British had to capture the city before a French army could arrive.

The link points to a different Battle of Copenhagen, a battle at sea. Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, the greatest sailor in the history of the world, defeated the stronger Danish fleet.

May be, there has been so many wars in Europe. Our memory are often biased to the latest. The one I thought of was the war when England sent burning arrows over Copenhagen. I saw a Tv program about it, and it was concluded that sending these burning arrows over Copenhagen was the first terror bombing in history. That can of course be disputed. I have no illusion when it comes to other European nations and our neighbours. One of the biggest mistakes you do is to assume that it can not happe again. IMO it will happen again, especially if this financial crisis turns into something worse that many economists, and nobel prize winners claim. I have no illusion about human nature.

This statment:

"Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, the greatest sailor in the history of the world, defeated the stronger Danish fleet".

can of course be disputed, too. The greatest sailor sounds invalid in my ears. He has been one of the greatest or the greatest Admiral in the history of the World, since there have not been many.

Regarding sailors:

I have two relatives from western Norway:

One has build his own sailboat and crossed the world's oceans with it.
His brother has invented a sail with a shape of an air wing that can cross 95% straigt againts the wind.

Regarding Admirals:

An admiral's profession is more of tactical nature than being a good sailor. You don't need good sailor abilities to defeat a better sailor if you have superior weapons.

Some people may mean that the admirals that fought the second world war in the pacific were better sailors according to your definition of the word. Everything is relative to the time in which it happen.

Image Google: viking ships

and you will understand that their conctruction is still unique. Beating them at their time of domination would be remarkable.

I am not a historian so you many know more than me.

By the way our best neighbour in history so far have been Russia. As far as I know there is only one place in the world where the Russian red army is still celebrated on the 8th of may, our common nordic border with Russia. The red army threw out the Nazis and retreated to their own territory. The good relationship between Russia and Norway has roots back to the relationship between exactly Russian and Norwegian vikings. While Churchill ordered English troops back to England a French General was angry since the allied was about to give the Nazis in Northern Norway the final defeat.

Sometimes it depends on whose glasses you watch history through.

That final is one of my dream finals. The best sport event until the next finale in Brazil in 2014. I doubt that will be better. It can, if a normal Brazil team meet the other best team in the world.

Professional commentators here say that this time the two best teams in the world, at present, meet. Most seem to favour Spain and they played excellent against Germany. It is frustrating for normal teams to play against this Barcelona / Real Madrid dominated team that hardly let the other team borrow the ball. But they made a very big mistake, because of Spanish egoism and individualism, the match did not end 2 - 0. The Dutch say that such individualism would not have been possible in their team.

Such individualism can be the reason for a loss in the finale. I hope Holland win.

Are you serious about England? Statistically Sweden have done it better since the 1930s and Italy have done it better by the same measure than Germany. I agree that normally Brazil plays the best football, but there was from the beginning something wrong with Dunga as a coach in my personal opinion, and he is fired as expected. When England won in 1966 there were some noise around the win, though not as bad as Argtentines "hand of God."

Germany, Italy and Argentine have sometimes come to the finale with two extremely defensive oriented teams. In this WM we have two finalists that attack after they have taken the lead. Holland nearly always play entertaining football. The same can be sad about Spain, but they have only had a tendency to be good before the WM. The opposite with Germany and Italy that has had a tendency to start bad and end in the finale.

We may have a very different opinion of good footbal at the national team level.

My bolding. Is that the end of England or a new country:roll:

The story were top news here too. Why don't you agree that Mister Bean is Englands most dangerous man like I think Jon Stewart

http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-july-7-2010/the-crumpets-take-manhattan

is for the USA?

Back to football, it is the first time in history the final is between two kingdoms.

I think Netherlands and Spain have both fielded excellent teams, and whichever way it goes, it will be a fine match.
I'm torn, really. Part of me wants to see Netherlands win, and part of me would like to see Spain take it. Time will tell. If I had to bet, I think I'd bet on Spain, but not with a LOT of confidence.
I would like to see Germany take third place, at least. Their defeat of Argentina was epic! :-P
5221
for some reason i dont want Germany to ever do well, I think it was an arrogant German guy who worked with me who, while we were discussing who would likely win the word cup, literally burst in in red faced anger about how Obviously Germany should win statistically based on past efforts and results. it was a wtf moment.

Raoul Moat dies after shooting himself during armed police stand-off

Gunman Raoul Moat, who evaded capture for a week after shooting his ex-girlfriend and murdering her lover, has killed himself following a dramatic six-hour stand off with armed police (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/7882906/Raoul-Moat-dies-after-shooting-himself-during-armed-police-stand-off.html).

(Someone said the shoot sounds more like a rifle, (police) than a shoot gun that Mr. moat had)

And the Northumbria Police said: “Police can now confirm that Raoul Thomas Moat, 37, of Newcastle, died in hospital early this morning.

If he shoot himself woudn't that be instant?

Mr Laidler, 35, a fellow doorman who has known the gunman since he was three, claimed that Moat had managed to get a message to his friends saying he had no ammunition left.

Just after I posted there was tv footage of what was going on. Pretty disturbing, just heard a man roaring in what sounded like pain, dogs barking, man shouting, get the gun away, get the gun away then statement from police that he had been shot. DOA on arrival at hospital 1 hour later. Today they have just said they tasered him, that would explain the roars of pain I heard. Tasers are a sick torture device. I did not hear any gun shots, but it was raining, there was what sounded like rain.

P.S.
I love Hemingways simple style. In his books, rain symbolices death as I think crows do in Van Gogh's paintings.

I did not know that.....then it was apt (and v.sad) that it sounded like rain, but I was actually wondering of what was reported as the sound fo rain, was taser fire, i dont know what it sounds like, but long burst could sound like static sound, a bit like rain...there is the bbc footage here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iknTKNMGf30&feature=related), where you can hear the sound, see what I mean, do you think the sound could have been a long burst of powerful taser fire?

You may have noted that I have problems with my museum computer and FF. I always use FF when I visit WPW from my computer. Opera is too secure for the vBulletin software. So that video can not be shown in FF / Flash.

You assume my English is too good. What is taser fire?

Sorry Kgun..your english IS usually pretty good...Tasers are like guns, except they do not fire bullets, they fire wires that hook into a person and deliver a current of electricity. Usually used on low setting in a short burst that just briefly stuns a man. If turned to high power and fired for long period a taser could kill a man...painfully. So I thought the rain like sound may have been the firing of a taser, set to a high voltage and fired for a long period, a static sound of electricty. I am just speculating although the police have said they used a taser.

Off and on topic as usual:

Police may be more advanced there than here. A few days ago American police "intervended" in an alkaida related case here, by forcing a too fast arrest. Perhaps not to smart unless it prevented a terror attack. Two persons are arrested in Norway and one with a Norwegian citicenship in Germany. The problem here is that it is much more difficult to jail them for actions that have not been done than in the USA. And a long trial may be needed to put them in jail. The provoked arrest is here seen as an intervention in a potential trial with the result that it is more difficult to get them jailed.

My son knows much more about this since he took a year at high school in the USA with top ratings. Here he is a little above average. LOL

He told me how the Americans can use "electrical bombs" to kill a network etc. He also shockingly told me that telephone bots (with and without manual intevention) called you to sell you products. Some days ago I lost my mobile phone in water with the expected result that it did not function any longe. I put it outside in the sun. Suddenly it functioned and I talked to him. He told me that I could have expected the phone to get a betteryt brake when I tried it after falling in the water. Some hours after I called him it did not function any longer.

I want a new iPhone 4G, but they are too expensive here. A trip to the USA can nearly finance a buy. Should I wait for an iPhone 5G.

Raoul Moat (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20100711/tuk-questions-over-taser-use-in-raoul-mo-dba1618.html) One of the fugitive's friends brought in to speak to him during the tense negotiations said he thought the stun gun triggered Moat to shoot himself in the head.

...

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of Moat's death as gunshot wounds consistent with the weapon he was carrying.

Report I read said that at 10.55pm, negotiators told police they thought he was about to committ suicide and so the firearms teams were given the authority to shoot him if they had the opportunity, but with less-lethal options, meaning either a Taser (stun gun) or a baton round. He died at 1.15am, possibly over 2 hours with electrodes stuck in him getting shock treatment before he died? It would explain why over that time he got weaker and weaker till he was just laying face down on ground and hardly able to speak, his gradually weakening state they say was because of the heavy rain and his refusal to put on a waterproof jacket offered him.

In our news, the police will be investigated. It is unclear whether the "electric gun" were fired before or after he shot himself.

Great for soccer that Spain won. Holland destroyed the match and should have had a red card early in the match. It was an English referee.

My bolding, may be some of us have left to other places long before that like the Forum David / ctabuk started: http://www.seoers.org/BB/
