Speaking of myself, my siblings, cousins, and all others of my age, I can personally attest to the fact that such reunions are interesting to the young to the extent that they have others their own age to play with. At such age they've not yet enough life experiences to understand that their elders will not be with them forever, that the day might come when they regret the loss of such.

I quite agree, on all counts.

That, after my being there but 5 days, the Admin. gave me my 3rd green rep., with the note "It is soooo nice to have someone around that knows what they are talking about!," struck me as being particularly telling.

Though she appears to be making efforts to improve the place, it is my view that, unless and until the Mods there are encouraged to weed out the tripe she'll be swimming upstream. As thing stand there now, there's too much quantity, and far too little quality.

In any case, I'll be doing my best to help turn that around, at least with regards to the latter.

somebody said
"but a reaction is in itself an action, which can be reacted to. Therefore there's only ever been one original action. Come on, own up. Was it you Tubby?". . . underline by me

No! It was not me. I only ever 'react'. Without the original action I am lost simply because I never know what my opinions or goals really are. It is the original Action that sets the cogs whirring inside my tiny brain. . . I really do need to understand what has preceded to give me direction. . I do not seem to have yet evolved a predictor that can prophesy the precise pathway my reaction will take. I sometime react to my own reaction, indeed I often nullify the action I take with the post action, action.

I am a reactor. . . If ever I am wrong or tempt you towards the wrong pathway (a rare occurrence) simply go back to the previous action . . And ignore my 'reaction'.

I am actually far to busy to post message in this frivolous thread - Please forgive me for not posting this message.

The question -
"Why the need to anthropomorphize that which has neither the need nor want for such? "

Simple Deepsand.
I wonder if 'Emotion' or the ability to feel or some sort of awareness, always existed in some form and our own emotion evolved because 'emotion' always existed.

Every part of our physical being all the elements existed before they were assembled to create every living thing so to speak.
the question, 'Is the universe an 'emotion' ?" Ponders the question.

If one is amused at an observation that 'Beliefs always outrank facts' and that basic emotions that are at the core of our beings. It seemed logical for me to ponder if the universe is an emotion.

You have said yourself that even rocks react to sunlight (heat - cold) - they expand, contract.

If the universe reacts to temperature - Could it also react to thing we are unable to measure, pain for example? The sight of pain can cause a a 'tear'.

If a tear can form at the sight of pain. how different is that to a rock expanding at the touch of sunlight?

I am just trying to keep the thread light hearted and frivolous.

Well, you *are* in your final incarnation, but this reality isn't it.
How would you propose to differentiate between, and identify, different "realities?"

For example, we distinguish between that which we experience while awake and dreaming, and identify each accordingly, owing to the fact that our experiences of episodes of the former are logically consistent with one another, while those of the latter are not.

If one is amused at an observation that 'Beliefs always outrank facts' and that basic emotions that are at the core of our beings. It seemed logical for me to ponder if the universe is an emotion.
While emotion may be part of the human condition, must it so be for all life forms?

In point of fact, there are indeed humans who are wholly lacking of such, owing to their brains being peculiarly physically structured.

Bear in mind that possessing of emotion is not a recognized criteria for being defined as being a life form.

The current generally accepted biological description of such is that living organisms exhibit all or most of the following characteristics (excerpted from wikipedia) :

1. Homeostasis: Regulation of the internal environment to maintain a constant state; for example, electrolyte concentration or sweating to reduce temperature.
2. Organization: Being structurally composed of one or more cells, which are the basic units of life.
3. Metabolism: Transformation of energy by converting chemicals and energy into cellular components (anabolism) and decomposing organic matter (catabolism). Living things require energy to maintain internal organization (homeostasis) and to produce the other phenomena associated with life.
4. Growth: Maintenance of a higher rate of anabolism than catabolism. A growing organism increases in size in all of its parts, rather than simply accumulating matter.
5. Adaptation: The ability to change over a period of time in response to the environment. This ability is fundamental to the process of evolution and is determined by the organism's heredity as well as the composition of metabolized substances, and external factors present.
6. Response to stimuli: A response can take many forms, from the contraction of a unicellular organism to external chemicals, to complex reactions involving all the senses of multicellular organisms. A response is often expressed by motion, for example, the leaves of a plant turning toward the sun (phototropism) and by chemotaxis.
7. Reproduction: The ability to produce new individual organisms, either asexually from a single parent organism, or sexually from two parent organisms.

While being a life form may be necessary for having emotions, it is certainly not sufficient.

Perhaps you misunderstood my meaning.

When I said "substantiate," I did not mean "prove," but, merely to include "substance," even if it leads to undefinable entities or irreconcilable contradictions.

For example, ponder the question as to whether or not the Universe is finite.

If so, then place an imaginary box around it. Then the question becomes "What's outside the box?"

If something, what? And, why is that "something" not part of the Universe?

If nothing, what is nothing? A vacuum? If so, how does that vacuum differ from one within the Universe.

"Substance" need not necessarily tangible.

It's a little late for me to offer anything substantial, though I require it of other posters. (Hm, wait, this is the BREAKroom, you have to give me a BREAK in here.) But I will try.

I do believe that there are dimensions we can't comprehend with our minds. In quantum physics there is a clear expectation (maybe even proof) of the 5th dimension. I know there are dimensions beyond that (not just because they are discussed in forums like: String theory and 6D Yau-Calibi like protein folding? (http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=370122)) but also because I know that time and space are infinite. So must be dimensions.

Somewhere in quantum theory is a well grounded notion that time is not linear, that the past and the future and the so called present are occurring simultaneously. While I find it hard to grasp that concept (as I find infinity hard to fathom) it does suggest to me that our past and future lives are happening right now in other dimensions.

deepsand

Even without delving into string theory, one might argue that our being able to perceive three physical dimensions serves as proof of a fourth.

Consider that, to a 1-dimensional being, confined to an infinitesimally thin line, only a point - a 0-dimensional entity - can be perceived.

To a 2-dimensional being, confined to a plane, only a line - a 1-dimensional entity - can be perceived.

In both cases, a given being perceives 1 fewer dimensions than the dimensions in which it exists.

I can not perceive anything that involves 'infinity' This is one concept that I simply do not accept. Indeed I think it is the root of just about every misconception that exists in the world. My dislike of 'the concept of infinity' and all the pathways that lead to it is well recorded in this forum.

Besides If I cannot touch it - I doubt it.

M-J Do not let deep wander off into conceptual theories that loose any relationship to what we can touch and feel. Touch and feel are the only proof of reality. This is merely an extension of a basic error that most mathematicians make. Basically mathematicians really do believe a farmer can have 7.5 cows in one paddock and 9.5 cows in another paddock -

I love winter Olympics, since we have a comparative advantage on snow and ice. We may be reduced to amateurs when people from Kenya and Ethiopia learn cross country skiing.

Now South Korea is the best nation in skating.

Congratulation. Big match. It will be much worse for you and us in 2014.

Excellent great Olympics. Learned very much about Canada that I did not know.

It must have been the worst Olympics for Austria, Finland and Russia in decades. I promise you. They will come back.

I'm sure that us Canadians will fare quite well during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia.
I noted that Canadians could exchange the other 13 gold medals to the one in hocky if that was the only option.

Our soccer trainer, professor Egil Olsen was sure that the level in hockey is extremley high. He was not so sure about the level in the sports where the athletes were running hills we ski on their legs.

I think I agree with him.

Snow or a lack of fresh water works, too. Haven't seen a gator west of Big Pine Key ... gators need fresh water and there isn't much of that standing around here except in ceement ponds - we do have lots of those!

There is a fresh water lens on a sinkhole in Big Pine and the gators thrivce alongside Key Deer. We do see the occasional croc down here, but they are more Key Largo denizens than anywhere else in the Keys.

Yes, the 1.26 microsecond delay between when things happen and when I'd expected them to is disconcerting to the point of being disorienting.

The greater risk from microwaving lies in the chemical BPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A) used to harden the plastic food containers, or the liners of cardboard containers, that are suitable for such use in a microwave oven.

Fortunately, the body flushes BPS quite quickly.

However, for those feed a constant supply of it, such a babies being bottle fed from plastic bottles hardened with BPA, and/or with formula from cans lined with BPA, the levels can remain sufficiently high so as to lead to hormonal effects with permanent consequences.

That is why Canada has banned, and an increasing number of States here are banning, BPA from infant products.

Alligators aren't crocodiles, all of which are fresh water denizens?

Actually, the American Crocodile, which ranges widely in the Florida Bay and the Everglades is highly saltwater tolerant ... Florida Keys Treasures - Crocodile (http://floridakeystreasures.com/creatures/crocodile/)

deepsand

Yep; more that a few crocodilians tolerate brackish waters, including Crocodilia Alligatoridae Alligator mississippiensis.

The only other extant alligator is Alligator sinensis, the Chinese alligator.

And, Southern Florida is the only place where alligators and other crocodiles co-exist.

BTW, caimans are also crocodiles.
