3767 - Now for the joke du jour:
A guy goes into a bar and says "bartender, I've been in jail 21 years, give me a shot of 21 year old scotch!"
The bartender thinks to himself, how's he gonna know the difference and gives him 7 year old scotch.
The guy takes a sip and spits it out and yells, "that's 7 year old scotch, i asked for 21 year old scotch!"
The bartender figures its a lucky guess and gives him 14 year old scotch.
The guy takes a sip and spits it out yelling, "that's 14 year old scotch, I asked for 21 year old scotch!"
Finally, the bartender gives him 21 year old scotch and the guy drinks it up with a smile.
A drunk in the corner sees this and walks up with a glass in his hand, gives it to the guy and says "here try this!"
The guy takes a sip and spits it out and yells, "that tastes likes piss!"
The drunk says "ya, but how old am I?"

Sometimes, my friend, boring can be good.
Last night, for instance, wasn't the least bit boring around my house.
The local cops, a couple of squads of soldiers, and a handful of narcotraficantes had a shoot-em-up at the convenience store across the street, and my next door neighbor's house got their front bedroom window shot out.
We had no damage, other than a VERY nervous dog. :D

Now you've got my curiosity up, DS. I know what I call a proper Black Russian... 1/2 Kahlua, 1/2 Stoly, no ice. What's your version?
Faux Black Russians substitute a chocolate liqueur for that of coffee.
To add insult to injury, the house vodka used by many is pure unadulterated crap; a truly good vodka is tasteless.
3841
When I was living in Mexico City, I had a Russian friend that drank expresso with Stoly, but he never called it a black russian... just coffee.
And he could put down a half dozen of 'em in a very short time, too. But then, he drank vodka like it was water.
Personally, I like straight vodka. I usually have a bottle of Stoly in the freezer, in case of snakebite. ;)
deepsand
11-22-2009, 06:37 PM
Vodka is a diminutive of voda, which means "water."
The two sound very much alike, with the greatest distinction being that the latter has the accent on the 2nd syllable; i.e., va-DUH. The failure to so pronounce, combined with the fact that much of Russia has limited access to safe drinking water, results in many tourists asking for water, and unexpectedly get vodka.

STORIES OF JIHAD FROM U.S. INTELLIGENCE
"The only ones who are spending the money and time translating Jihad literature are the Western intelligence services," wrote Islamic radical Anwar al-Awlaki, "and too bad, they would not be willing to share it with you." ("Born in U.S., a Radical Cleric Inspires Terror" (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/19/us/19awlaki.html) by Scott Shane, New York Times, November 19).
In fact, a growing number of websites (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jY_2-CPTTSABOyexptWD2kgTmIfgD9C2T3HG0) offer jihadist literature and sermons in English. But it is true that U.S. intelligence maintains a prolific translation activity focused on Islamic extremist literature, and that most of the resulting translations are not intended for public distribution.
The DNI Open Source Center recently translated an Indonesian anthology of four short stories about aspiring young jihadists entitled "Wind From Paradise" (pdf). The stories describe how their protagonists came to take part in jihadist campaigns in Afghanistan, Thailand, and Chechnya, and the ensuing "martyrdom" that they or their fellows found there.
It is not a particularly rewarding collection, on any level-- esthetic, theological or political. But the narrators and their stories have several characteristic features that may be worth pointing out.
Remarkably, their primary conflicts seem to be those of adolescence. Their Islam is not concerned with the divine will as much as it is with themselves and their own unruly passions. ("I drowned all my feelings by reading the Koran slowly," one says. "So a feeling of happiness and relief runs through my whole body," writes another. "I also have the feeling that the guilt that has plagued me all this time has now been uprooted.")
But above all, the stories portray jihad as an appropriate, even noble response to external oppression by the non-Muslim world. ("The mujahidin had to fight against the Christian United States, which wanted to control and dominate Afghanistan." The Western enemy mercilessly abuses prisoners, "but no matter how cruelly they interrogated and tortured him, [he] kept quiet.")
The logic of jihad is predicated on the victimization of Muslims by infidel forces, the stories repeatedly insist. ("So now he was defending his Muslim brothers who had been so cruelly oppressed.") The oppression of Muslims by other Muslims is beyond the narrators' ken. So is the possibility of confronting oppression by non-violent political means, except perhaps through the propagation of stories like these.
The translated stories have not been approved for public release. Rather improbably, their "authorized use is for national security purposes of the United States Government only." But a copy was obtained by Secrecy News. See "Indonesia: Translation of Jihadist Book 'Wind From Paradise'," (http://www.fas.org/irp/world/indonesia/wind.pdf) Open Source Center, 1 March 2009.

MILITARY COMMISSIONS VS. CRIMINAL TRIALS
Many of the procedural safeguards that are provided to a defendant in a criminal trial are not available to those tried in military commissions, or are present in attenuated or modified form. Thus, for example, military commissions offer no right to a speedy trial and may allow hearsay into evidence.
These and numerous other distinctions between the two judicial frameworks were helpfully tabulated in a new report from the Congressional Research Service. See "Comparison of Rights in Military Commission Trials and Trials in Federal Criminal Court," (http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/R40932.pdf) November 19, 2009. Related information on the rights of detainees in a criminal prosecution was discussed in "Closing the Guantanamo Detention Center: Legal Issues," (http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/R40139.pdf) updated November 17, 2009.

I managed to escape courtmartial during my military career (albeit narrowly). I was counseled once to request CM, but opted for NJP. As it turned out, I walked away scott-free, as I should have, because my captain knew me. In a CM, I would most likely have been convicted, by circumstantial evidence.
At the core of things, the military process really bears little resemblance to its civilian counterpart. If they so desire, they can refuse you the right to be present, and can censor your witness list. In some instances, there is no appeal, and if all else fails, they can always invoke good, ole UCMJ Article 134.

This is a problem I deal with a lot in Mexico. It seems that NOBODY has any notion of punctuality, or the common courtesy that drives it.
We entertain several times per year, and invariably, although I might say, "starts at 5pm, dinner will be served promptly at 6:30", there are still SEVERAL people that habitually show up 1-1/2 to 2 hours after dinner, and yet still expect to eat!
This Thanksgiving, we nearly overcame that... everyone showed up at the same time - over an hour late!
So I served them cold food. I'm not going to burn it or dry it out, simply because of their rudeness!
