You know, last night Jupiter had a few fewer moons facing us, or something. Darn clouds kept us from seeing anything. Anybody get in on the action?

Update: jupiter no moons (http://www.google.ca/search?q=jupiter+no+moons)
Out in the dark countryside, a 5x scope is sufficient for viewing Jupiter's moons. However, there's too much light pollution where I'm at to be able to observe such. Likewise, meteor showers are only poorly seen. :(

I don't know much about escape velocity, beyond getting out of the parking lot of the local beerhall when the stuff hits the fan. I doubt I've hit anything that would compare favorably to Io, though.

However, it was good enough! ;)

Io orbits at 36,000 mph (16.1 km per second--1.41 x earth escape 11.4 kmps). So what is the escape velocity of Jupiter?
What is the velocity required for Io to escape Jupiter? Or, for Jupiter to escape Sol?

If the former, and assuming that 1) Io is presently in a perfectly stable orbit with respect to Jupiter, and 2) any perturbations by other bodies are negligible, then any increase in Io's angular velocity, tangential to its orbit, will allow it to slowly spiral away from Jupiter.

If the latter, substitute "Jupiter" for "Io" and "Sol" for "Jupiter" as appropriate.

I had a great uncle that made shine, down in the Meridian, MS area. No car radiators for that old man, though...he had a fairly sophisticated setup. I only saw it once, when I made a run up there with my Dad and my uncle. I'll bet they were kicking out a quart every five minutes! And it was mighty good stuff, too! Made his deliveries in five ton bobtail trucks. He was fishin' buddies with the sheriff, so I imagine that's how he got away with it for so long. Folks came from out of state to buy his shine.

He was found, face-down in a gully, dead from a heart attack, about two months after he quit drinking. Nobody with the talent and the inclination to carry on, so I suppose it all went to seed.

Convinced ME not to quit drinkin'!

WTF? Why?

A .22 match rifle, w/ 3x scope, is a most effective means of taking small game, up to and including turkeys. It results in much less metal scrap strewn about, less edible meat being damaged, and a great reduction in the number of wounded animals being abandoned and consigned to tortuous deaths.

Even for big game, a sufficiently powerful small caliber, such as a 222 or 220 Swift, in the hands of a good shooter will suffice.

Why?Beats me. I went in for my hunting license one year (back around 1981 or 82) and was told I would have to use shot. No explanation.

With just the v-sights from 60 yards my lever action Winchester Model 70 (30-22) was a crack accurate rifle. It was a little bit heavy at about 7 lbs, but I think that helped to steady it.

Sold that rifle the following week, and never looked back.

"I've Just Seen a Face" - Beatles (1965; Rubber Soul (US), Help! (UK))

I've just seen a face,
I can't forget the time or place
Where we just met
She's just the girl for me
And I want all the world to see
We've met, mmm-mmm-mmm-m'mmm-mmm

Had it been another day
I might have looked the other way
And I'd have never been aware
But as it is I'll dream of her
Tonight, da-da-da-da-da-da

Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again

I have never known
The like of this, I've been alone
And I have missed things
And kept out of sight
But other girls were never quite
Like this, da-da-da-da-da-da

Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again

Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again

I've just seen a face,
I can't forget the time or place
Where we just met
She's just the girl for me
And I want all the world to see
We've met, mmm-mmm-mmm-da-da-da

Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again
Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again
Oh, falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again

"I'm a Believer" - Monkees (1966); lyrics by Neil Diamond

I thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me.
Love was out to get me
That's the way it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.

I thought love was more or less a givin' thing,
Seems the more I gave the less I got.
What's the use in tryin'?
All you get is pain.
When I needed sunshine I got rain.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.

Proof of Infinite Number of Primes:

Let P(1), P(2), ... , P(n) be the finite list of all Primes < P(N)+1

Let PP = P(1) x P(2) x ... X P(N)

Then, PP+1 = 1 mod (P(n)) for all n = 1 to N

Therefore, PP+1 is either Prime, or is divisible by at least 1 Prime > P(N)! :D

Good idea; but, with one fatal flaw. The appointment is with a local machine, and a human located 200 mi. away. I can remotely screw with the machines where he is, but not with his phone system. On second thought, since his phones are on his DSL trunk, I could, but I'm too bleary eyed at the moment to pull it off in short order. And, on third thought, his initial contact will be via cell phone. :( :( :(

BTW, I'd a reply to your most recent PM nearly finished when the power went. I did have enough time to back it up to the HD, but not enough to both save all of my other open work and do a floppy copy. When I get home, sometime Sat. night, I'll get it off to you.

Time now for me to crash; at least I can set the alarm for 0730 rather than 0600. :D

Enjoy.

Not particularly motivated here, yet. I was up 'til the wee hours, and just woke up about an hour and a half ago. These days, it takes me that long just to get enough caffeine in me to function. ;)

Me either, guy! I just celebrated my one year anniversary of retiring, and I've gotten to the point where I'm really starting to enjoy it. Took a little getting used to, after nearly forty years of marching to someone else's tune, but I came around to it. ;)

You do, of course, mean demotion. (Midshipman - Junior Officer; Mate - Enlisted rank.)

It was his attempted attack on the Captain, following his learning of such, that led to his being keelhauled.

deepsand

Depends on :

How fast you can talk;
How much time you spend awake; and,
How long you live. ;)

On a serious note, what is it about your life that you hate?

And, equally important, what is it that you love?

3232

I've felt like that before, Jabo.

Try just taking a step back, and decide what you like and dislike about your life, and then make conscious commitments to preserve or change those things, as applicable. Don't tell yourself, for instance, "I'm going to stop doing this"...tell yourself, "I'm going to start doing less of this, until I stop it altogether." That allows you to make progress, without unreasonable immediate expectations, and yet keeps you on the road to improvement.

We don't build bad habits or bad attitudes overnight, and it's not realistic to expect to be able to undo them overnight. But it IS realistic to require ourselves to make continuous improvement. Improvement takes time and effort, but success is intoxicating, and breeds more success. ;)

Clarification - I meant, not what do you love about your current life, but what do you love of all the things that you know of.

Of those things that you love, which could you now be doing? Can you swap something that you are doing, but would rather not be doing, for something that you'd love to be doing ?

jabo

there are a lot of things in life that I would love to be doing... like be with this one girl, but, I ain't in her world anymore... she is happy and that is not because of me... I would love to just be at home now and do nothing, but instead am here working, to earn money to spend to live... anyways, there are a lot of things to love like being alive, but to exist and be invisible is like as good as not alive...

Doc

I can appreciate that it may seem that way to you at this moment, because you feel you've lost something essential to your happiness. But there is another way of looking at it, too. I was once very much in love with a girl, to the point that I came to realize that her happiness meant more to me than my own. That's a very precarious position to be in, because it only works as long as neither person takes advantage of the other. We were lucky, in that we both cared enough for each other, to never abuse the situation. But eventually, it came to the point where she felt she needed something else...more than I could offer her. Since I had already promised myself that I would do what made HER happy, above what made ME happy, I didn't really have a choice, but to move on, and wish her the best. She's happy now, in fact will soon be a grandmother. I suffered for a while, drank a lot, fought a lot, cussed a lot, and then got over it. Eventually, I found someone that made ME happy, too, and now I'M a grandfather. Life is a series of circles, and we never really know which circle we'll end up in. But if we stop moving on, we'll just stay where we are, how we are,, and go nowhere.

Trust me, Jabo, you'll get over it. Everyone does, even though everyone thinks for a while that they won't. ;)
