Our web site host provides us with statistics using Summary SP Lite 2.6.2. While the system provides all sorts of information it lacks the information I want such as search phrases by search engine for specific periods.

I'm looking for an inexpensive stats program that provides good basic meaningful information. Your suggestions please.

Google Analytics is popular, so is StatCounter.

If you're specifically interested in search engine referals, hittail (HitTail - Long Tail Keyword Marketing Tool (http://www.hittail.com)) does a great job of that!

GA (http://www.google.com/analytics/) will be a good choice for you. If you need a log file analyzer, Nihuo Web Log Analyzer (http://www.loganalyzer.net/) is my recommendation.
