I have few questions on improving my listing on SEs
1) Will my link on a forum or classified or a bulletin board having high page rank boost my page rank.

2) how should i get my site be listed instantly in google altavista or alltheweb etc. though i had submitted my site to all of them.

3)Why isnt dmoz listing these days.

4)If i am linking myself to a contact us page having PR 0/10, but the site home page having 6/10 will that be ok for boosting my PR. If OK, will it still effect PR.

thanks

Hi Datamax,

1) Will my link on a forum or classified or a bulletin board having high page rank boost my page rank.
Yes it should but be carefull Google has a strong policy against guestbook spamming

2) how should i get my site be listed instantly in google altavista or alltheweb etc. though i had submitted my site to all of them.
For 'instant' listing, you should go for PPC like Google Addword and Overture.

3)Why isnt dmoz listing these days.
DMOZ is a Human Directory you should leave the category editor a couple of months before saying they don't list. Also to check a site status go to http://www.resource-zone.com

4)If i am linking myself to a contact us page having PR 0/10, but the site home page having 6/10 will that be ok for boosting my PR. If OK, will it still effect PR.
Why has the contact page a PR0 even though the homepage has PR6? The PR that is 'transfered' come from the page not the site so if the site owner did something to restrain the PR to the homepage you won't get any on the contact page

Hope this helped

In case of "Why isnt dmoz listing these days?" what i want to know is when i submit my site to the directory it goes to the page cannot be displayed.

In the question "If i am linking myself to a contact us page having PR 0/10, but the site home page having 6/10 will that be ok for boosting my PR. If OK, will it still effect PR"
By this i mean I am exchanging a link with someone who is putting my link on his sites contact us page and is asking me to put his on my home page. should i go for it.

I mean i checked his contact us page have pagerank value of 0/10 and his home page of 4/10.

Pl guide

thanks again

Hi Datamax

Try to find out why his contat page don't have any PR (may be it says in the meta that the robots shouldn't index it in which case you won't have any PR transfer.

As for DMOZ yes they seem to have a server pb these days. Try later this month or early next one.

Hope this helped

Hi, I have a On-Line Multi Award Winning Gift Basket Business that is growing daily & I work from home.

The only 3 places that I actually pay (cash money)for advertising on-line is in the Yellow Pages, Pink Pages (Australia) & Targeted Mail-Outs, I am also on the free search engines & anything else I can put my business name in for "Free" as well.

But I would like to offer my experience of Off-Line Advertising to anyone interested :)

# I am a member of 3 Chamber of Commerce in my State. This is good for mixing with Corporate Cliental - my Target market.

# Networking - I go to many Networking Seminars all the time & meet fantastic people. I take a Gift Hamper or Flower Arrangement & offer it as "Surprise Door Prize" - great advertising. Totally unexpected. Maybe another business could offer a 1/2 Day Workshop, or a Free Business Portrait Pack, what about a Free Clean of your Office (for the cleaning people), other suggestions - hair Dressers, give out 3 x $50.00 Vouchers (not 1 x $150.00) this will bring in 3 new customers - not just one (make it for your services only - stock product not included), Printing Company could offer 500 Free Business cards, Web Based Companies - could offer 6 Months Free Hosting or maybe Pay for their Website Registration - Hopefully you all understand & can find something usefull from these suggestions.

# Mail-Outs - target marketed only. I post out an Introductory Letter & then follow this up 3 days later, requesting a suitable time for the client to receive a "Sample Gift for Free". Once I am at the prospective clients business, I explain that we can custom make to suit needs, wants & budgets etc.

If you already have some pretty fantastic clients - why not ask if you could include a brochure with their next mailout to all their clients & then give them something in return for Free from your services. Then also include an offer for their clients as well - make it worth their while or they won't even bother with your information. I give my clients-free delivery for 3 months (they send 50 gifts that's ok, but if they send only 10 - fantastic, it has hardly cost me anything really).

# Strategic Alliances - I work with other business companies. Aome of them are - photographers, debt collector, wedding planners, funeral parlours, restaurants, jewellers, real estates. I give them discount vouchers to give to their customers, they give me business. With the photographer, he gives me portrait packs to include in all my Gifts for New Babies/Wedding/Anniversary etc.

# Write to your local paper with a story & information - it might be a feature on Home Based Business & how it is growing, maybe a story on Debt Collecting & how many businesses are not looking after their financial side & the figures show the rate of many closing, Website people could write a story on the latest free features or games available on-line.

Newspapers & magazines are always looking for something a little different, so give it a go, don't promote your business directly, but make sure you put in your contact details for the bottom of the article.

Everytime I achieve something new in my business - I let the local papers know (sometimes they pick up the story & sometimes they don't, but it only cost me 15 minutes to type it up & send it off).

# Ask your customers if they have a couple of names they could give to you, then ring them up & explain that you were speaking to your client & you asked if they thought if any of their clients may like to have a look at your services. It breaks the ice if can use a name that the other person can relate to.

# Read your local papers & if there is an news in there - like a New Business has opened in the area - send them a congratulations & welcome to the area letter. Maybe someone has achieved a Promotion in the Government - send them a Congratulations & Best Wishes in their new career letter.

Have you ever received one? I have & it felt really nice that the person took the time to write the letter & send it off (that was 3 years ago & I can still remember the name of the person & business). It is the warm, fuzzy kind of feeling that someone noticed, that makes it stay.

Well, I hope I haven't bored you with these hints & I hope I have helped a little with some ideas.

Why is this site owner offering you a spot on the Contact page, and expecting a return link on your home page? This is not a trade I'd make! It really wouldn't matter to me how good his contact page ranks! This is not a great trade! The people who go to contact pages generally are not looking for (or expecting) links, they are attempting to contact that site owner.

As far as DMOZ I have been experiencing trouble with them myself, try to be patient and re-submit to them later. Problems seem to come and go - not worth stressing over. :-)

With exception to the signing itself - Google has no such policy - a link to you can not in no way negatively affect you. Guestbook signing is a valid method of PageRank Development admittedly though a last resort thing... if you can't develop elsewhere.

2) how should i get my site be listed instantly in google altavista or alltheweb etc. though i had submitted my site to all of them.
For 'instant' listing, you should go for PPC like Google Addword and Overture.

Agree... but you must also continue paying to continue advertising.

3)Why isnt dmoz listing these days.

As Leo suggests, if this page exists already, there is somehing preventing PR from transferring... but just the same the likelihood that this page will make any difference is extremely remote.

but if a website-home page has a page rank of 6/10 and other pages have page rank of 0 will that be ok if i get my link placed on other pages of the site for page rank value. Or should I strictly be placed at the home page.

Will it give me the same pagerank value that home page could have given to me.

datamax,

PR transfer is done from page to page not site to site so if you put a link on a PR0 page you will not have any PR transfer even if the homepage is PR10.

vaniaul,

You could try to download the Google Toolbar for example ;)

http://toolbar.google.com/ then just install it. It works with IE.

Hope this helped

I responded to Vani in a private message but felt that the response might be useful to others so I have included it in the forum.

Good morning Vani,

Thanks for writing! The Google toolbar has all kinds of useful information in addition to page rank. The info button lets you see a cached view of the page, backwards links, similar pages and will even translate the page into English.

http://toolbar.google.com/ then just install and use! :-)

Good luck!

Can I ask a quick question about the Google Toolbar?

When I enter my site homepage (PR5) then jump to a page on my site that sells my product Phone Thongs, I see a PR2 on the toolbar.

I was listed number one under the search term Phone Thong in Google (now number two and I don't know why). When I press the link in the search results, it takes me to the same page that had a PR2, but now it ranks PR0. How can the same page have two different page ranks from just coming from different sources?

Pages in Question:

www.discount-leather.net >>> Press on Phone Thong Link to get PR2

Search Google for Phone Thong, then press on link to the Phone Thong page to get PR0

I'm confused.

Kent,

I did not immediately know that PHONE THONG was even a link! It appears to have a PR4. How long has the second page existed? As an internal link I wouldn't worry about the second lower ranking at this point.

But, I really would suggest that you make it clear that it is a link. I don't care what anyone says, we have trained people to look for links to be blue and underlined. At least underline it! IMHO

Thanks for taking a look Laura. I have an underlined link (in white) on the left hand side for the phone thong, plus the picture and phone thong highlights down below.

Maybe I mispoke, when I checked yesterday I had a PR2 on the phone thong page and I was number two in the search...today, I'm PR4 from the website and also PR4 from the search directory and I'm back up to #1 in the search.

I guess things change just quickly enough that I should check what I'm writing about on a daily basis before writing? It could have been part of that Google Dance thing we all hear about.

Thanks
Kent

To be into DMOZ fast, one thing to be carefully considered is the category you apply in.

Otherwise, your submission rotates thru a lot of people and reaches the right category and then is approved by the editor.

Did you post info about your website in resource-zone ? Do let me know !!
