Froogle has been renamed “Google Product Search” says Marissa Mayer, Google’s VP of Search & User Experience. It also sports a redesign, and product results are now returned at the top of normal Google search results at appropriate times.

Thus ends the name Froogle as a Google brand. It was launched in 2002, never really went anywhere, and was unceremoniously dumped from the Google home page last year in favor of video search. Traffic to the site fell dramatically.

So how does Google Base fit into all of this. Is Google Base the same thing as Google Product Search?

Intially I thought Froogle was to become Google Base???

These companies need to make up their mind and stick to a brand that they built up to avoid confusing people, just like cingular becoming AT&T despite the fact that cingular spent over 4 billion building that brand name.

When all these were same, why they called them with different names?

Not sure why this got ressurected BUT it's interesting since I just recently had to make some changes at Google's request.

Interestingly, even though everthing is uploaded through Google Base, the product search (old Froogle) and Google base are indeed 2 different things, searchable in two different places.

The important one IMO, is the "product" search since these are what are used for the "one box" listings.

The reason is as Google buys new startup companies or companies that are of interest to them, then they have to somehow fit their technology into its already growing technology.

The result is that old products, get a new life and some have to be dropped in favour of the new ones.

maybe its the hype of the new product, that older products get taken over by newer products.

sometimes they even try to sell you the same old stuff under new packaging, thats how marketing works, my dear neighbor from India.

I think the same is true for all other Giants like MSN and Yahoo.

Example, blogger will remain blogger for some time, and will not become Google Blogging anytime soon. unless blogging looses its charm.
