I have a wireless network that works fine, after installing the latest Microsoft xp updates, I can no longer access my printer from my laptop. I get the message:
RPC server unavailable
my setup is:
laptop with wireless netgear connection to a wireless router that is also connected to a desktop to which the printer is installed and connected.

prior to the updates everything worked fine.

I would like to either fix the problem or uninstall the workgroup on both machines and start over again, unfortunately I cant seem to do either at this point.

Thanks for your help,
Mike

The latest updates address security holes related to RPC. Likely this is your culprit.

Do you ahve the "server" services running on the desktop machine., the one with the printer installed? If not, this will cause you to receive this error.

Microsoft is moving towards disableing many services that used to be enabled by default for security reasons, and one of the recently reported vulnerabilities is the "File and printer sharing for networks" so maybe that is disabled.
Also try your ICF (internet connection firewall) Also check ICS (internet connection sharing) on the PC.
Have you checked the Network printing folder? I see it could also be a password issue that shows up here. Maybe the 'remember my password' feature got disabled.

Thanks for the time and advice webmeister and mikmik. sorry i didnt respond sooner webm.
I looked at the file sharing, it is on. I will check the desktop and make sure that the server services are on and check the ICF and ICS.
The older i get the older this gets, really dont like this stuff, used to enjoy it now i learn whats wrong fix it and cant remember what to do next time. Takes up so much time trying to get setup to save time.
Anyways, thanks again for the advice and your time.
Mike
