Seems that content is king - after all! And link buying is not recommended. Better sharpen up those pencils and get the dictionary off the shelf - back to writing brilliant content again!!

We have dealt with this issue very well at our blog.
You may find it intresting:

Have a nice reading.

All matters: content and links.
And good link directory is just a helper. And very good helper.
Of course, if you are using a directory that is just a pile of links - you are in trouble.
But if this is a directory with relevant content on link pages, and automatically adds relevant news (read 'content'), and molds links with content - you are on the right track. Surely this is about the power of links TOGETHER with content, but still, this is a link directory, just a very good, modern SEO way of it.
And I have proofs that good link directory only helps: one of my sites got in a matter of few months #8 in Google for 'link exchange script' and fluctuates there with stability (positions #9 or #8). In a very tough niche, with most super-duper link gurus.
Summary.
Everything depends upon the way directory is used. If it is the old-fashioned categorized pile of links - you are right, site is in trouble. If this is something that uses new fashion and gives search engines exactly what they love - links + content - then you will get benefits from it.
